Analogue is *ALWAYS* preferable over digital controllers in any
game/sim where some degree of control is required.

This is because analogue devices are progressive, that is to say, the
more you move the device, the more the car/plane/whatever moves in
that direction, this method ultimately gives you *almost* infinite
degrees of control.

Digital controllers merely use "on" & "off" switches, and are
therefore less responsive.

For instance in a car driving program using a digital controller to
accelerate gives you either full throttle (on) or no throttle (off),
and nothing in between.

Whereas, an analogue controller gives you full throttle (moving the
device to it's maximum position), no throttle (not moving the
device)or as much throttle as the variable movement of your
controller allows, depending on the movement parameters of your
controller? which gives you much more control. EG:- you can "feather"
a throttle with an analogue device,  you cannot with a digital one.

As ever, you pays your money and you takes your choice, I think for
driving games you really need a wheel and pedal set-up for maximum
control, (I have an F1 Sim from digital edge, which is analogue and
very responsive), but I also have a Logic 3 trident pad, which is
basically the same as the Nintendo 64 pad, and that is great to use
too, as it has both digital *and* analogue controls!).

Go to a shop, etc, and try out some controllers, and get one that
feels good for you......

Not true.

Er, in the past yes, they were  off or on, but Controllers like the MS
Sidewinder range are digital sticks, but not "on/off".

again, no, no no.

yes you can ! :)

You could do a lot worse than the MS Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro 8)

Absolutely. Don't buy a box, insist on a test first hand.
