GPL - steering setup?

by Richard Walke » Sun, 07 May 2000 04:00:00

Hi all,

I'm not quite sure what I should be doing with GPL regarding my steering
wheel setup.  I'm using a Logitech WingMan Formula (black, gameport,
non-FF).

What about steering?  Should I use the 'steer_hack' to disable the speed
sensitivity?  Where should the linear/non-linear control be?

I find that disabling the speed sensitive steering means I can't get out of
the pits properly, or go round the Monaco hairpin.  What do other people
do?

On to the pedals... well, just the brake really.  As many Logitech users
find, the brakes lock up too easily, so I've looked at CTFJ, but I'm not
quite sure how it should be setup.  What settings do other people use?

All ideas are welcome!

Cheers,

Richard.

U don't need to use the steering hack, using it will mean u need to set
the steering ratio to 7:1 or something ridiculous like that

Linearity, set it as far left as u can handle

<Snip>.

For best results, move the linearity slider all the way to the right. The
car may seem too sensitive at first, until you're used to it, but you'll
soon find that you have more control over the vehicle, especially when
correcting. Steering hack really is a matter of personal preference, but I
disabled this to give a more consistent feel to the steering.

I see.  It's just that one of the GPL sites I was reading suggested doing
it, but I found it quite impractical!

I'll try that - thanks!

I played with turning off the steering hack and actually liked the feel
and control at most of the tracks.  But found it impossible to get
around others (i.e., Monaco), so for consistency's sake I've left it on.

This does seem to be a good idea.  I've just given it a try, and I'm doing
better than ever!  :-)  Mind you, I have not really got fully into the game
yet, so fighting for 3rd place at Silverstone in a novice race is amazing
for me!!!  (in the Lotus, default setup, 11 laps of fuel)  Sadly, I made a
dense error at Copse and crashed.  :-(

So this means you have added the 'steer_hack' like in core.ini?  Can you
get round the Monaco haripin OK, and out of the pits?

Interesting!

I've had a fiddle, and I can't quite get used to it when it's too far to
the left.  Mmmnnn... maybe I need to spend longer playing the game?!

Thanks for the tips people,

Different wheels will probably complicate things, but my times have
improved since I started to use...

1) the hack (ie no help at low speeds)
2) linear slider all the way over to the left.

All my setups are 1:20. I feel I have more control over the steering that
way. At lower ratios although I can react quicker, I tend to oversteer.
Sounds like you'll need quite a bit less than 1:20 if you're having
steering problems at low speed. It might be a calibration problem though.

Oh, I use the Papy "direct" input method... I forget what the option's
called, it's on the same page as the linearity slider.

using the steering hack and a 20:1 ratio eek!!! u likely have troubles
going around the parabolica!!

to be able to use the hack without having problems making the tighter
turns in the sim, u need to run something like 7-9:1 ratio

Nope... at 1:20 lock to lock on my F1 Sim is about 140 degrees.

When I just got GPL I put the slider entirely to the left, and found
it unplayable, way to sharp steering. When I got more confident in
time, I moved the slider to the left more and more, and now it's
completely to the left... necessary for a perfect car control.

Somewhat related to the topic: Does anyone know, how much steering wheel
radius did they have (or use) back in 1967? The Logitech wheel has only 180
degrees, which isn't enough IMO.

Hmm... yes... I did try this, but it seems that I need *way* more lock than
I am used to, to get around some of the sharper bends.  Not to mention
hairpins and the pits!

It shouldn't be.  The wheel is calibrated OK, and works in other games.

I'll give that a whirl.
