Racing-wise, exactly how is the CART procession any different to F1?

Agree - fairly dull race - but that IS unusual for CART

F1 had a VERy good outing at Brazil and Malaysia though.

It has been more of a trend the last several years as the
Series has attempted to hold down speeds by reducing
downforce and ground effects.
The reputation of CART was built on the Andretti's and Unser Jr's
blasting through the field.  The last two years of Zanardi were probably
the last real passing days.  Still Paul Tracey moved up many spots in
the first race and also at Long Beach..but when he got to the leaders, his
progression ceased.

Street racing (or the short ovals the last few years,
unfortunately) in CART is rather similar to F1 (as far as little
passing).  The two full course yellows at Long Beach helped the
leaders maintain position and removed pit strategy/performance from
the equation.  But you will see a lot more variety in CART qualifying
than in F1 (different names at or near the top of the order).

OTOH, you still have road courses and larger ovals.  The two
superspeedways with the Handford device can make you dizzy.  :)

And if you *really* want passing, tune into NASCAR...

"But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was
nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

Well thanks to the rain and the Montoya.

It was a snoozer, indeed.  Uncommon in CART, but more and more common these
past years.  I speculate many reasons, but to resume the situation, CART is
currently in an existence-crisis.  They don't know where to go
technical-wise.

Actually.....I thought it was one of the best LBGP races
in recent years.
Its just that TV coverage always sucks because they
focus on the leaders who arent even close to passing
anyone, so they miss all the passing going on back in the field
by other drivers. (like tracy & Junqueira did)

Another reason is that there arent many teams with inferior
equipment this year.....No more Mercedes engines, eagle chassis
or goodyear tires.  (i know they didnt have GY tires last year to)

There also seem to be less of the luiz garcia type of drivers now to
(getting lapped on the first lap...hehe)

I think there should be a fair amount of passing at the next race,
which is a
Oval.

If you want to see allot of passing, then the Cart superspeedways
are the best thing to watch.....probably more passes done on
those than any other series race such as Nascar/IRL/F1

It was a bit of a dull race, but keep in mind this was Long Beach,
a tight street course.  Kinda CART's Monaco, you know?  Watch one of
the road races, they're good.

kink in front of it so everybody but Tracey seems to go single file there.

Mexico was a bore, Detroit's always a bore, tight tracks require skill but
they don't make for good racing.  Bring on Elkhart!

But the thing is... LB has always been an interesting race.  It's never a
snoozer :)

Yep..taking out the sharp right hander at the end of the main straight
killed the overtaking....and ...the added section only serves to string out
the
cars so that nobody can get close enough to pass on the backstretch..
Those first 3 turns were all sharp 90degree bends which just
killed most driver's momentum...but deep brakers like Unser Jr could
plow through those two wide...I still remember several races where he
was passing drivers like DeFerran on the outside and scraping the concrete
as he went by...never punting the leader(except Mario once :>  )  and making
up several places in spots only Zanardi might have thought to pass....
Those were the good ol days of Long Beach...I suspect, with the current
rules
package, and the seemingly equality of teams and drivers, even Elkhart and
Mid Ohio
will be processions.  :(

Nah, Paul will pass the field again at Elkhart, at least.

Detroit is CART's Monaco... Usually LBGP provides quite a bit of passing.
However, since they reconfigured the track last year there hasn't been as much
action up front.
