I have a P2 350,ASUS P2B-S MB,128MB,9 GB hd,32X CD-ROM,Matrox Millenium for
2d,two Monster 3D 2 12MB (Voodoo 2 3dfx chip)video cards in SLI mode for
3d,17" monitor, and Sound Blaster Live Value with four speakers. I can run
F1RS and the updated version Monaco Grand Prix RS 2 with all cars, graphics,
sound turned on it runs smooth. I can also run Viper Racing and Grand Prix
Legends smoothly. These titles are worth upgrading for also. Many gamers are
buying a Celeron 300a CPU because its a lot cheaper and can be overclocked
to about 450Mhz. I have read the Abit MB's are easy to overclock. I haven't
tried overclocking my P2 350 but I hear 390Mhz is about as high as it can
go.
I would get at least 64MB of ram and 4GB or more hard drive. For sound card
I would get a SB Live Value edition or The new Diamond MX300.
For 3d cards there I two ways you can go. The first is to buy any decent 2d
card and then add on any popular brand card that has the Voodoo 2 3DFX chip.
They are most all about the same ,come as PCI and will run games that use
Glide,OpenGL or Direct 3D. If you have an extra PCI slot then you can also
connect two Voodoo 2 cards together in SLI mode. This is currently the
fastest setup and high resolution.
The other option is to get a Voodoo Banshee or a Riva TNT card. They are
both 2d and 3d in one cards. The Banshee is PCI and the TNT can be AGP or
PCI ,but I would get AGP. The Banshee is similar to the V2 and runs in
Glide,OpenGL, and Direct 3D, But the TNT is OpenGL and D3D only so it may
not run some games as well if they need a patch to run in OpenGL. Otherwise
the TNT is very good image quality in 2d and 3d, and can run at higher
resolution than the V2 in some games. There is a lot of debate about what
the best card is and new ones are soon to come out.
A steering controller and pedals is a must for any real driving sim ***.
For a good cheap wheel, Thrustmaster seems to be the most popular. I built
my own wheel and pedals.
