Go to 3D Software and the processor usage will be bellow 100% but, graphics
will be 8-bit and not 16-bit.

Is this normal?

Surely the game cannot over use my processor can it.

I am running a PIII 550 with a voodoo 3 5500. could it be
this percentage represents the combined processing of my
CPU  and Graphics processor, as I hope, and not some mental
madnessss on my poor processor.

Tell me soon...I cant stop playing but I dont want to mash up my computer.

you set direct3d fastest performaces on 3dfx tools, didn't you?
for a strange problem this setting doesn't work fine with GP3, so
switch to a single chip or (better) a 2x o 4x antialisiasing
rendering...

I'm running a PIII 600e and V5 5500 and I'm usually at 60-80% even in the
rain at the start of the race.  Something is wrong with your PO number.
It's too high for your powerful system.  I run at highest res (1280!) with
everything on at 2x FSAA and it's silky smooth with the low numbers
mentioned above.

I presume you mean Voodoo 5 5500 not V 3 5500.  In which case switch from
"fastest-performance" (for d3d under anti-aliasing in 3dfx tools) to either
"single-chip" or "2x FSAA".  I guarantee this will make a big difference.
Apparently Grand Prix 3 doesn't support the Voodoo 5's SLI mode.  Well,
that's what 3dfx told me anyway.  Sounds like BS though to me.

Also, when the PO goes over 100%, GP3 goes into slow-motion.  So with the PO
on 200%, a 1:20 lap will take 2:40 to complete!  Sounds hard to believe but
that's how GP3 (and GP2) is written.

around 70-80% all the time.
Except for starts in wet conditions, what OS are you using? Under Win2000 I
get a very high PO but that's probably because I'm still using the V3
drivers that same with this prerelease candidate.
Can anybody explain me why in most racing games Voodoo beats the Geforce
while the Geforce is a more advanced product. Same goes for the AMD versus
Intel processors.
In most racing sims my Intel-3DFX combi is quicker than far more advanced
AMD-nVidia combis.

Same with World Circuit (GP1).

It is normal as far as how the game was designed and operates.

As someone else mentioned, it just means that your
framerate will cause a GP3 laptime of 1:20 to warp
into a SloMo time of 2:40.

Also it does sound like something is amiss. I would check
your V5 options.

Because it isn't really *that* more advanced?
Because it isn't fully supported by games (i.e. no TnL)?

What about AMD-3dfx combos? ;-)

Your system is good enough to be running GP3 below 100% PO really.  It will
be slower from the tv views. but from the***pit view you should be able to
run 1024*768 and below 100%.

Are you using the frame-rate utility to enable the desired frame-rate to go
beyond the 25 fps limit?  For comparison, my system is a P3-650 with V3 3000
AGP (having just sold my voodoo 5) and I use the frame-rate utility to run
the game at 36 fps and at 1024*768.
I'm able to run below 100% PO almost all the time, including races, although
only from the***pit view.

Reduce the actual framerate in Video-Advanced options to below or around the
recomended framerate.
