If it's not Multiplayer, I get bored

by Kevin Anderso » Fri, 20 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I was just thinking how much fun Gp500 is. Only thing is I was online racing
Nascar2 on TEN. I rather race a 3 year old dated nascar game then race a
fresh new awesome game because there are no other humans to race at any
given time. I loved GPL when it came out, but there was no place good to
race. VROC was around but I don't have a lot of time and when I want a race,
there was just to much waiting, and endless practice sessions, and not to
mention the warping. So quickly after I bought GPL I was back to N2. I
realize now that I will Race whatever TEN or another equally well place to
race offers. If there is no organized stable place to race GP500, it will
die in my mind withen a month. Same thing for N3. i rather race N2 on Ten
then N3 if it has no home. I wish Ten would becaome the racing Network and
just get all these racing games on there.

Thanks for taking us Europeans into consideration.

I get ok pings to TEN, but average race times of 3am my time are a bit of a
turn off. I am therefore thankfull for games that offer independant online
playability. The dedicated server option in GPL 1.1 can bring nearly LAN
perfect racing when most racers have decent connection quality.

I too would gladly part with some cash for a stable, regulated and populated
racing environment, but it seems there's no urge to make it happen over
here.

Sounds like your asking for what AMA Superbike is proposing.  I'm
not sure the Pay to Play base is big enough for any racing sim to make
it, remember when TEN finally got N2 working, there was ZIP, Zero online
racing except modem to modem in some games and maybe 3 to 4 racers on
kali.  TEN would have a tough time getting the solid driver base they
have with today's independant server internet.  The Quake model is far
more popular it seems, than the TEN model.

However with the current technology it is a must that we have a
client/server style.  IMHO, it is a must for us to have a high end system
available to the sim-racer.   I do not see N3 or any other oval racing style
game offering 20+ racers virtually warp free over the internet without high
powered servers.  Quake and N3 are totally different in multiplayer needs
IMHO....

It will happen, it will just take some time. Unfortunately we are still a
year or so behind then States when it comes to things Internet.

FWIW, I race on TEN from the UK. I only get to run league races at the
weekends due to the timezone differences but that's OK as I don't really
have the time or inclination to run long races during the week in any case.
But even on midweek evenings there are usually as many, if not more,
pick-up races available on TEN as with GPL.

I did try getting a Euro league going on TEN at one point but there were
never enough of us to make the races worthwhile. Since we *can* get decent
connections to US servers such as TEN (with ISDN my connection is almost
always better than the majority of americans I race against) then having
TEN - or preferably some more customer oriented company - in the US as a
core racing network is an OK idea for we Euros. All it takes is enough of
us to join for there to be plenty of good racers on at the times we like
;-)

I've also managed to race someone living in Korea on TEN with minimal warp
so the Pacific Rim should also be able to partake in a US based service.
Australia may be pushing it unfortunately, but I have seen reports of them
getting OK connections to GPL servers in the US, so who knows?

Cheers,
Richard

Good thing there is a choice and we can all decide where to race. :)
Personally, I definetly dont want to give money to a 3rd rate organization
with horrid customer service and pay that much money just for the pleasure
of running a 3+ year old game.  Good thing there is GPl for me! :)

And I hope that TEN NEVER becomes the "racing network", period.  That would
be almost a death's dirge for online racing. :?

Nah, I doubt, IF the retail GP500 is any good, that it will "die within a
month".  Perhaps maybe in the US, but GP racing is big over in Europe so I'm
sure it will take much longer to fade away.

Great! What about those 'poor' guys who don't have a credit card to pay
for play on TEN!!!
Pay for Play?  Shame on it at 19999!!
Sorry to all TEN/NROS-racers.

You can find a couple of the guys from the TPTCC league in the Demo
arenas Rik, they don't get too much warping either, but I guess you may
have to test various ISP's before you could get a good connection

I was more than a bit surprised to learn about this, but if you try
pinging some Aussie ISP's, I think you will be surprised how much their
connection have improved over the last year or so, amazing, but it will
be a bit of a hit and miss afair, right now I have 450 ms to a server I
know of in Australia, but I've seen it below 250 at times, and my ISP
routes theough the US to get to Australia, so I guess I could chop off
some 150-200ms if I lived in the US
