The subject says it all. I went to the site but I could not find
anything that said what it was all about. Is it specific to F1 2001 or
is it something that uses it's own software?

It is Ubisoft Formula One Racing Championship, released earlier in the year.

All the best,

Ubi never disappoints its customers.

Btw.. that producer from EA, James Hawkins I believe, said the F1 2001
patch (including ff) would be released mid Nov.. let's see if EA's
customer support is even better than Ubi's!

PS, David, I was right and you were wrong.

Hey, what was the patch supposed fo fix?  If I were interested in getting
F1RC(assuming I could find it), would it even be worth having a go?  I usually
end up buying just about every racing game I see.  I'm just wondering how bad
the 'out of the box' version is...

Depends... while I would say it's relatively playable from the word go,
others found the AI problems unpalatable.

I have experienced the following...

-startline pile-ups through/and/or erratic slowing before T1.

-inability to avoid/go around obstacles (like a spun out car) in the race..
This is especially annoying to the player as whether one ends up on the
racing line or not one seems to get collected *every* time. Groups of AI
cars can block eachother/the track for laps on end.

-erratic slowing when being lapped.

I haven't seen much evidence of the famed shunting problem (also known as
"Surtees syndrome"). If one hits ones own markers right, there usually isn't
a problem unless one leads a little train of cars where I've experienced the
tail end charlie bumping the others into me.

That said, it is said the AI learn as they go along, maybe I didn't give the
them enough opportunity to practise by skipping sessions.

The AI *learn*?  Hmm...is there a way of stopping that?  The AI problems you
described in F1RC sound like the problems in GPL.  I can deal okay with the AI
as described, but if they get faster, I'm in trouble...

It's all pretty vague... could be I misread the blurb at the time. The
general gist was the AI would progress through a weekend in a realistic
fashion and adapt to the players habits. As far as I can recall it didn't
say anything about absolute speed.

eldred,

as a big fan of the game, let me summarize.

pro's
* fantastic graphics (better than f1 2001 imo)
* lots of addons freely available (www.f1-star.de)
* online racing community via relay (www.f1rcrelay.com)
* gorgeus track renditions in terms of inclines & slopes (better than
f1 2001 imo).
* excellent hotlapping with ghosts
* excellent wet / dry / mixed weather racing
* great Force Feedback.

con's
* AI numerous faults.  not avoiding enough during braking
* AI not avoiding accidents.
* AI pitting during wet / dry races are predictable
* Multiplayer sucks out of box. goto www.f1rcrelay.com for a better
system.
* No patch in sight.

i still love it to bits.

If you can pick it up somewhere for a low price, it might surprise
you.  i don't regret buying it for one minute.

Regards all,
istoff

Good summary. I've managed to sort out my steering problems in F12001, but
my gas pedal still does very little until it's pressed down almost
completely.

The main difference in the driving model between F1RC and F12001 is that
F12001 has more grip at medium and high speeds. Maybe a little less at very
low speed chicanes and hairpin turns.

Does anyone know where F1RC can be purchased and shipped to the US?  I have
heard all the stories of the bad AI but I would buy it for the hot lapping
alone.

Thanks,

Bill

i'll sell you mine.  i couldn't get it to even run (i.e. start up)
consistently on my machine (1.7ghz p4; gf3).  i'm not the only one
that has had this problem.  i'm a big fan of the ghostlap feature that
ubi's f1 products and was really disappointed i couldn't get f1rc to
behave.  i'm patiently awaiting a "patch" or new release.

Now, the trick is to find it somewhere in the US...  InteractCD.com didn't have
it(That's who I bought MBTR from).

That's odd. It's in all the stores in Canada. I bought it at Electronics
Boutique in Victoria. It didn't stay on my HD long but that's another story.
EP, if you drop me a line (you know the address) I'll mail you my copy.

p.s. I got MBTR from InteractCD.com too. One of these days I might even play
it...
