MTBR - about to give up!

by Eldre » Mon, 22 Dec 2003 06:23:03

I loaded up this game again.  I liked the demo, but had never been able to get
the retail to work with my wheel.  Go into the game screen - no graphics.  All
I get was green and gray,  and the 'shadow' of the truck, but that's it.  I
downloaded and installed the patch from the website.  It's supposed to bring it
to ver 1.10, but it only takes it to 1.9.  So anyway, I try the game again.
This time, I can see the truck and the track.  But I still have the same
problem with my wheel as before.  The brake pedal works backward - meaning it
engages when up and releases when I press it.  And, I don't have any sound now.
Checked in the game menus to make sure sound is on and volume is up, still
doesn't work.  After running AOL to post this message, I realize IT doesn't
have any sound either.  Reboot - still no sound.  I look at the sound
properties - the damn thing turned my wave sound off in the control panel.  I
set it back to the right level, and go back into the game.  I have sound now.
But I still can't get the brake pedal to work right.  And to think, I used to
think *EA's* controller calibration sucked.  Grrr...
System specs:
Athlon 1.2
win98se
DX 9.0b
TSW2mod w/ split axis
GF4 T14600 video

Can anyone help?  Otherwise, the stupid thing is going up on ebay.

Eldred
p.s.  Too bad, too...because I love the idea of the game, and liked the demo.

Just a thought here ----  I don't have the game, but I had a similar problem with
Rally Trophy and an original TSW.  The only way around it was to manually edit the
config file.  Of course, I wouldn't know what it's called in MBTR, but is there
something like config.dat in there somewhere?  If so, look for some axis settings
and reverse the Y or RZ axis setting (that's usually the brake pedal) and see if
that helps.

Eldred...alot of people had a minor niggle with MBTR until the 1.10 patch
came out and i was one of them.
I am not certain but i really think you need the 1.10 version installed for
everything to come together.
You are 100% correct in thinking that this sim is worth the effort,so please
dont Ebay it...lol
My own experiences were full of niggles and compromises but finally i got
there and had a magic 6 months ***ed to this sim,so i advise you do a
little ground work maybe...
Have you been to the homesite..?
Does it still have the FAQ section etc etc..

I will try and dig out some old haunts if i can, they all helped me alot.
Good luck and dont give up

Yeah, I downloaded the patch.  However, it only brings it to 1.1.9.  That's the
version number I see in the menu.  Their webpage still has a FAQ section, but I
haven't seen a description of the problem I'm having.  I tried to download the
other file, and I get:

Es ist ein fehler aufgetreten.
Sie mssen den Datenschutzbestimmungen zustimmen

Don't have a CLUE wtf that means, except it didn't work.

Based on my rusty German, the first sentence reads:  "There is an error."  I can't
decipher the second sentence unfortunately, but I think it has somethng to do with
bad or corrupted data.  (I think).  Perhaps if you tried downloading using a
different browser?

"An error has ocurred. You must allow secure sites", or something to that
effect.

"Datenschutz" is data protection, "bestimmung" is destination (in a web
context: website) and "zustimmen" is to allow/to condone, hence the above is
my best guess. Perhaps you need to add their site to your "trusted sites" or
something.

I'll have a go at installing and updating the game myself later.

Same error with Netscape 7.1.  Maybe I'll just delete the whole thing and start
again...

Done that... main menu also indicates version 1.0.9 and all the menu options
have reverted to German (no problem for me, but a bit inconsiderate towards
international customers methinks), but it fixes the display problems and
allows for split axis. So, IMO, this is the "good" update.

Unfortunately, if after setting up your wheel and selecting the axes (click
the axis and hold down the control for a moment or two for it to be
selected) your brake works in reverse, I don't see any option to change
that, nor in game nor by editing a file. If your rig allows you can try
combined axis and for control type I recommend selecting Joystick instead of
Wheel (Lenkrad), otherwise control is just too vague.

Quite an enjoyable game, with nice track graphics and fairly believable
physics (it's the ancestor of Mercedes Benz World Racing after all). It
would be a shame if you couldn't have a play for mechanical reasons.

Mine is still in English...<shrug>

Well, that sucks.  1 - I really don't want to change all my setup/config info
just for ONE game.  2 - I don't know where the adapter is for that.  I haven't
used combined axis in over two years, and I've moved in the meantime.  I sent
an e-mail to the tech support on their webpage, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well, at least I know now not to waste my money or time on MBWR...  Thanks
anyway.
