Explain me the turbulence (?) in overtaking at high speed

by Anssi Porttikiv » Wed, 28 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hi, you racing experts!

Could someone explain me, what happens when I overtake in Grand Prix 2 at
high speed at straights? Often my car starts to bounce in sideways direction
and I drive into spinning, and off the track. I guess this is some
turbulence effect? I guess I should increase my downforce or keep more
distance to the car I am overtaking.

Imagine stepping out of your front door into the 300 KMH winds of a Cyclone.
Similar concept. You have gone from a hole in the air into turbulant currents
travelling at 300 KMH! Downforce settings don;t help. Just be prepared for it!

In a simpler explanation, it happens at slow speed, go behind a big
truck at 120 kph, get real close on a windy day, and all of a sudden
change your lane real quick, you'll notice a sudden rush of air
pushing your car. On a motorcycle the effect is even more pronounce.

BTW, If you increase your car downforce (in your sim) the effect will be
even greater, but since you have more wings, you might not loose it
completely.

Perhaps you have the steering help enabled? It sometimes sends you
into spins by overreacting, at least that was my very frustrating
experience until I had a wheel.

Yes that's it.
It only happens in GP2 if you have Steering help enabled.I guess Anssi
is driving with keyboard or using SHelp with the wheel.
It's a know bug.

Thanks. I drive with the keyboard. I guess I'll just have to buy a steering
wheel. Meanwhile, I can just keep a distance to the car I am overtaking at
high speeds.
