How to learn to drive in CMR 2?

Anyone know of any sites explaining how to properly drive (with a steering wheel (MS)) in Colin Mcrae Rally 2? It's no fun when you
don't know how to properly drive in the game! :-(

Thanks in advance for any help

wheel (MS)) in Colin Mcrae Rally 2? It's no fun when you

Don't try to drive it like it's a real car, it won't respond like one. When
entering a corner, turn the wheel and the car will turn. There is no such
thing as understeer in CMR2, so nothing else is really needed to negotiate a
corner. You might want to downshift a gear or two to get the best possible
acceleration out of the corner, as the sliding/drifting will reduce your
speed (I know it sounds incredible, but that behaviour is actually
modelled!).

Seriously speaking, have you set the steering to analog within the game? And
you might want to disable the steering damping, it makes the steering feel
sluggish... I think it's meant to be used with keyboard only.

There *is* understeer in this game, if you try and turn in when the brakes
are "locked", for example around the ornamental roundabout at Rally GB stage
3. Off the brakes though, I agree, it feels like there's no front a/r bar
fitted! But watch the in-car on Channel 4 and you'll see that the works cars
seem to manage this most of the time too. They rarely have understeery
moments.

The best technique is always to turn in on a trailing throttle, then the
nose is very pointy and you get loads of oversteer. But the fastest times
come when you resist the temptation to be miles sideways at every turn.
Keeping it somewhere near straight often pays dividends.

That's all some good advice..
Although SOME basics of car driving (I'd assume) do come into play. I mean,
you have to slow down for corners..

Once you get to a corner (the fake Nicki Grist (co driver) calls out corners
as to what gear is recommended for them if I recall correctly). So if he
says 3 left, slow down to about 3rd gear, turn into the corner, and the car
will get sidways, apply the gas full and keep the car sideways and turn in
the opposite direction to kepe the car from turning right around (although
it's terribly hard to do that). Then you'll be facing straight into the
corner exit, so drop into the next gear and off ya go.

I think the key to beating the whole game is not getting in accidents.  I
remember some of those courses were pretty ***, with LOTS of trees near
the track and such.

If you're really into rally, and have a wheel and such, I suggest ya check
out "Rally Trophy". You'll learn how to better control a car, and when you
go back to CMR2, you'll be wondering what the hell it's phsyics are based on
:) Other good rally games are "Rally Masters" and "Mobil 1 Rally". Also,
"Live for Speed" has some really nice rally cross, and a 4WD car is supposed
to be coming out. Uhmm.. what else. CMR3 is coming out for PC soon, but from
what I've seen, the physics are no different than CMR2, unless they've been
updating them huge since it's console release (maybe that's why it's taken
so long for the PC release?). Oh yah, the makers of "Rally Trophy" are also
coming out with a rallycross game called "Flat Out" that is supposed to have
miproved physics.

Though its disheartening to hear that Rally Trophy has better physics than CMR2 , and that CMR3 won't be better! I have a P3 733 so
I think I'll have to upgrade before I start worrying about the physics implementation. For my next computer, what's a good graphics
card to get?

Thanks!

I have a PIII 733, 384mb, GeForce2 video card.  Rally Trophy works great,
with almost all the eye candy turned on.

Now that's a surprise, i have 512MB, same card, and the games plays crappy, any idea what setup could be wrong?

One man's great is another's crappy.  I have seen posts similar to this
for years.  WHen the Great person's framerate is quoted, it is often well
below the threshold that many users will accept.  HOWEVER...if the first
fella thinks it's great, more power to him.

I'm getting about 25+ FPS in N2002, and 30+ in GPL and Rally Trophy.  Now
granted, it does jump around depending on the track, number of cars (not a
factor in Rally Trophy), and location on the track.  As far as eye candy
goes, i have it maxed out in GPL, almost maxed out in RT, and only about 60%
of it turned on in N2002.  I run N2002 and GPL in 800x600, RT in 1024x768.

Of course I started with updated drivers.  Then I went to:

http://www.guru3d.com

And grabbed RivaTuner.  Then i read the GeForce FAQ and the myriad of how-
to's on the various tweak sites to figure out how the video card driver
needed to be tuned. Setting up the eye candy in the game was easy enough, but
sorting through all the advanced driver settings in RivaTuner took quite a
bit of time and reading.  Anyway, for my tastes, anything around 25-30 FPS is
plenty good.  I can get them up to 50+ but the games look like crap.

good luck, hth,
jeff

For me, frame rate is good but the game itself is choppy. I will take a look at the site you linked to. Thanks!

OH Right!  Another CMR2 fan......

I understand how you feel.  A year or 2 ago when I started playing
CMR2 I was looking for help and guides to go faster and have more
control.  I found technique like Scandinavian Flick, handbrake turns
but.....they did not really help.  Most people just mention, speed
control and line/position.  Here is some of the things that works for
me.

Practice makes "Perfect?"
Just drive it, as much as you can, spend as much time as you can.  You
will get the feel of the car, and learn the stages.  CMR2 must have
been THE ONE game that I played consistently for about 2 years.  And I
have not finished the advanced level championship.  Ok, I suck.  But I
make progress.

Take a break
I found that if I continued to drive for an hour or 2, I started to
make more mistakes.  So..stop and watch your replays, and take it
easy.  It is all about concentration.  At any give skill level,
concentration is what kept you from making silly mistakes.
Then if you get frustrated trying to break new records in one stage,
try another stage or country with different terrain and surface, or
try another car.  You may be surprised to find that you can break new
record when you try something new.

Slow Down
In real driving as welll as in the driving game, this is the golden
rule.  You slow down to go fast.  It is a paradox that when you start
feeling everything is going slow, maybe you are actually going
smoother, faster with better control.  If you are forever plowing
through the turns, you are either turning in too late or/and are going
too fast.

Take the shortest line
Although the speed may seem slower but you will be quicker if you can
clip the apex.  Get as close to the inside of the turn as possible.
Again you need to control your speed and the attitude of the car.

Listen to the co-driver
It is pretty impossible to listen and drive at the same time.  But if
you do, you can prepare for what is ahead.  CMR2 has  very good
pace-notes, it often give you distance and the turn.  But I know I
still have trouble thinking ahead.

Learn to setup the car
In general, stiffer/lower the car-> more grip better control.
Gearing is important. ..
There are info on the web

Challenge yourself with different cars
I took on Stratos early on.  It teachs me about throttle control.
Once you nail that, the beast is tamed.  RWD cars are not as fast, but
they are fun because you drive them with throttles more than with
steering.
With Mini, you need to reduce the force-feed back to make it
driveable.
I love the handling of Escort.

Have fun!
This really is the most important thing, isn't it?
Richard
ps: 5 hrs into Rally Trophy.....it is a totally different ball
game.....

Thanks for the advice! I hope my wife will give me the time to practice all you suggest! :-)

So how do you find Rally Trophy, as compared to CMR2?
