Why is this clutch there. Does it make any difference?

Well, I have driven a real automobile with a clutch
before, and its most handy use seems to be _shifting gears_ (duh).
I know speedy drivers like to shift without using the clutch, but I
thought that only worked near a certain rpm.  So what's the
word?  Did real f1 drivers back then regularly use the clutch to shift?

I take it you mean for GPL. I have a clutch on my units and it
not only makes for more realism but I tend to be able to get
of the mark quicker without a lot of wheel spin by slipping
the clutch a bit. Also if I spin out I can get my foot on the
clutch and the engine doesn't stall.
Starting from the grid I can put my foot on the clucth, select
first gear and then rev the engine to 2-3000 RPM. Drop the
clutch and I'm off.

Nigel, would you consider the clutch to be a major benefit in playing
GPL? The reason I ask is because we're about to release this option for
our TSW and TSW2 lines.

Can you stall your engine in GPL?

on my units and it

Well hard too say Trev. I would be going way out on a limb if
I was to say it will make you faster. I have been in the habit
of clutch even for N2 because my shifter wouldn't work unless
I hit the clutch pedal.
In GPl, if I spin out (I do that a lot) I can get my foot on
the clutch and the rear wheels can then free-wheel enabling me
a better chance of getting the car under control again.
My clutches are varible so you can ride the clutch from a
stand still and get a better of the mark take off. You still
have high rpm's with minimal rear wheel spin.

Yes, AFAIK they did. AFAIR indycar drivers don't use the clutch to
shift.
