Actually - this is wrong anyway....
Dolby Surround can only be correctly decoded using a delay (about 20mS if
memory serves) between front and rear speakers. Connecting the wires as I
suspect this tip goes, works only to cancel the mono center signal. A better
way is to use a 741 op-amp configured as a differential amplifier and feed
the output to a separate amp. That way you have some control over the
relative levels and so on. The delay line, BTW, is a real pain to implement
and it's expensive too even using solid state BBDs.
When it comes to Pro Logic, the whole apple cart gets tipped over. In this
case, Dolby have used (among other things) signal steering to give much
greater channel separation than with the "passive" system described above.
So you see, you can't do it with a few bits from Tandy: guess those DSPs are
pretty safe after all: phew!
How do I know all this? I wrote a book on it! Thanks to a theiving publisher
