GPL: Anyone know of an IROC-style league?

by Simon Goodwi » Sun, 22 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hi all. Just wondering if there's a league out there in which all
drivers must use the same set-up.  Frankly, I just don't have the time
or interest to fiddle around with set-ups ad nauseum.  Besides, I happen
to think that competing would be more challenging and realistic with
everyone driving the same car.

Thanks,
Simon Goodwin

You have half of this right.  It would be more challenging.  The only
series *that I know of* in open wheeled cars that uses the same setup is
the barber saab series of a few years ago.  But even then I could be
wrong.

It's just my opinion, but with the same setup for everyone you would
have the slowest of drivers still being slow and the fastest of drivers
still being fastest.  The only difference would be with the intermediate
drivers,  the slower of such would be closer to the faster of such.

I do like the concept and would like to attempt something like this
just to see what kind of a difference there is when everyone uses the
same setup (default setup).

We race 4 "spec" races in IGPS last season.  Everyone was required to use
the same chassis with the default setup (for both the practice and the
race sessions).

From what I've seen, Mike is right.  Slow drivers are still slow drivers,
fast drivers are still fast drivers, and people in the middle are closer
to the fast drivers than the slow drivers.  Overall, the spec races were
a little more fun than the regular races because everyone had a
relatively equal chance to do well (if they could keep the car on the
track).

One caveat in GPL - there is no way to force a client to use a specific
setup.  IMHO, it would be a simple matter to download a setup file from
the server to the clients when they connect, and also disable the
client's ability to change the setup at all.  This would promote the spec
(IROC) style of racing.

Sorry, i just banged this note out this morning.. I didn't mean 'realistic', I
meant..erm.. well, 'fun' I guess. And instructive too. If someone's driving my
pants off in the same car/setup.. I'd sure like to follow them round the track!

Hmm, I've heard of that league.......too bad the league-boss has decided not
to run another season, but maybe we can get some1 to use the basics of it
and host an IGPS3 ? As I heard by rumor, the league-boss will allow the new
host(s) to use his web-page to work with......any volunteers?
cheers

Markus
