Totally Confused re Video

OK..... I'm a hardware ninny,  I admit it.

I'm *totally* confused re these video boards and standards. I've
looked at newsgroup posts, manufacturers' pages, add--on pages, etc.
and still  don't get it.

Here's what I do know (I think):

a) There are two standards at work in sims: Rendition and 3dfx.

b) My Papyrus sims (ICR2/N2) work with Rendition. Many others use
3dfx.

c) My PC (P200, 32 meg) doesn't do either. (S3 Virge chipset on
motherboard). I have no free IRQs.

Here's what I *don't* know:

a) I see discussion of some things that do these Rendition/3dfx things
being addons to an existing board and others being boards that
replace. What's this all about?

There's obviously lots more  But I'll move on to the central question.

I want to run my Sierra sims in Rendition mode.  I have the video now
described up above (it can be disabled in BIOS). Other than the Sierra
sims, I run GP2, WordPerfect7, Quattro Pro 7, PGA Tour Golf, basic old
database programs, and my Internet apps (Netscape and Free Agent the
common ones). Also FS95 (soon 98). I am likely to buy any decent
racing sim on the way.

What should I buy?

I am no expert but I believe some folks are running both the
cards side by side. The Rendition will replace the on board
video chip and the 3dfx will plug in beside the Rendition and
do it 3DFX stuff.

I think it was Eric T Bush (frequent in newsgroup) that has  a
Screamin 3D(Rendition)  and a Monster 3D (3DFX) setup but
don't quote me.

If money not a problem then go for both.
