O/T OC questions for first time

by V \ » Sat, 15 Jan 2005 07:49:25

I just FINALLY upgraded my CPU from an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ to an AMD
Sempron 2800+ and was wondering about overclocking it to 3000+ spec.
It's running at 2g right now but what would my overclocking max be
before I run the risk of burning the chip up? My CMOS setting is at
166mhz which is up from the XP being at 133. Having never overclocked
anything before I thought I'd ask here where the "knowers" are. Thanks
for any help given.

I can't help you on this, but you might get some good info at
alt.comp.hardware.overclocking.

Since you already have a 166FSB, you may not have much room for
overclocking.  Alot depends on your M/B, heatsink, etc.
You'll almost certainly have to up the voltage a little to get much of
an overclock.  The other question is will your motherboard allow your
memory to run at a different speed, or will your memory ramp up to
above 166 w/o timing adjustments.
Get a copy of SiSoft Sandra (the free version) and check out your CPU
temp.  I think under 60degC is a safe rule, but it depends on the chip
(I haven't kept up with the latest AMD CPU's, so I'm not sure about the
Sempron).
Definitely check out alt.comp.overclocking, as well as the
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard group for your motherboard.
Good luck!

Well, too bad you don't know the chip codes on that 1700+.  My 1700+ is
currently running at 11x225 = 2.4ghz, or around an honest 3400+ rating.  The
later versions were some of the best overclocking chips ever made.  How high
you can go largely depends on the motherboard and the ram you are using.
You should tell us those.

My board is an MSI KT4AV and the ram is one PC2700 512 DDR and one
PC3200 512 DDR (not my choice they got mixed).  The chip has got to be
around 4 yrs old now. No idea how to get nor read the code off the chip.
Hope this new info helps out.

You may be runing that XP1700 at a rating of a 3400+ but thats about like
saying you can spin your 4 banger at 15k. Spins fast but you havent any
torque either :-)  No amount of OC can create more transistors just makes
whats existing cycle faster.

At 15k rpm you don't need that much torque to create power ;)

XP3400+), they perform the same. Doesn't matter how the performance is
achieved now does it?
