Painting Cars "help"

This has become very frustrating.  I have searched all of the previous
postings in this newsgroup for information and found some but nothing
seems to work.

I have a custom car that I've downloaded and used with no problem in N2.
Imported the PCX car file into my driver and works perfectly.  I now want
to make a few enhancements (adjustments) to this same PCX car file.  From
the PaintShop in N2 I "export" the file which becomes T_PLAYE.PCX in the
N2 directory.

Using previous postings on how to effectively defeat the pallette problems
I still cannot get it to work.  All I'm trying to do is on the rear of the
car change the wording... example... from "EXXON" to "ESSO".  PSP allows
for anti-aliasing and all of that but the back and forth between 256 and
16mil colors won't allow for the changed image to be imported.

Anyone with specific (tested and true) instructions or web sites for me to
look at for instructions would be greatly appreciated.  I'm not an
artist... I just play on on the net :)

You need a copy of the special N2 palette from either the US Pits
(http://www.theuspits.com), Chris Frederick's website, or one of the other
locations. Here's how I do it:

1. Open the XT_PLAYE.PCX file in PSP.
2. Select the just car image inside the magenta borders.
3. Copy the car image, leaving the selection in place (IMPORTANT!)
4. Paste the car image as a new image.
5. Convert the image to 16 million colors.
6. Make the modifications.
7. Load the special N2 palette into the modified car image.
8. Copy the modified car image.
9. Go back to the original XT_PLAYE.PCX image and select "Paste into
selection".
10. Save the XT_PLAYE.PCX image.
11. Import the car image in N2.

Steps 3, 7 and 9 are critical to ensure that the palette is not corrupted
and that all the colors are converted and displayed properly. This works
flawlessly and I have used it numerous times on my own cars.

I'm using PSP 4.12 and it doesn't have the option of PASTE INTO
SELECTION.  I just have to align it back exactly by hand.

Thanks Michael and David for the help!  It works.
