New Machine question

by jrigdon » Fri, 14 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I'm going to purchase a new machine this week and I want to list some of the
contents here so that I can get some last minute recommendations on the
system.  I will be using it primarily for games, NASCAR 3 and flight sims in
particular.

PII 400
128MB (8ns)
WD 6.4 GB UDMA
ASUS MB
32x CDROM
56K USR
Turtle Beach Montego sound card
Diamond S220 + Diamond Monster II 8MB
Creative Labs CSW100 spkrs w/subwoofer

Money is somewhat of an object so these are the components I thought would
work best.  If anyone has any comments or suggestions please let me know, I
don't want to upgrade for a while.

Thanks.

you should think about a 12 meg voodoo card the prices are droping all the
time and you don't have to by a monster there are other cards the have the
same performance and same board design for less money.

IMHO

I purchase Gateways because Ive had good luck with them in general *knock on
wood* - however custom building your own system is the way to go.

DELL has a very good deal on PII 400s right now which include 17inch monitor and
64mb of SDRAM (sure you can up to 128).

I use my computer primarily for business/internet and N2.   N2 is the only
game.... *ugh.. Simulator* I run <VBG>  So my next system will be very similar
to your as well =)  Im hoping that the Hercules *** video card will
prolong my purchase a bit though until we find out what TEN is going to do with
N3 next spring (hopefully).

Good luck =)   If you arent in a hurry... the 450mhz machines will be coming out
and may push the 400 prices down a bit.

In november AMD is coming out with the K6-2-400mhz
and the test on the 333 have been a considerable amount more than the
PII-400

I defiantly wouldn't go with the Western Digital Hard Drive. Get yourself a
Seagate Medalist Pro drive, it runs a 7200rpm, has 512k cache, 9.5ms, and a
sustained transfer rate of 11.8mb/sec. 15-20% faster then any other IDE/UDMA
drive out there now. Close to SCSI performace at UDAM prices. Drive should
cost under $200 for a 6.5Gb.

Also consider your 2d/3d card, its PCI and has 4mb, Rendition V2100. Why not
got for like an AGP Thriller 8mb V2200 card?

Also make sure you get PC100 SDRAM.

The Diamond S220 is Rendition 21-- isn't it, well anyway it is an awesome 2d/3d
card, I have it paired with my Canopus Pure 3d, they work beautifully together

Actually, the frame rates are different. Check out the frame rate stats. the
monster card is 3-9frames per second faster then the creative labs card. Go
ahead and stick with the diamond, the card is totally awesome and i know
because i have a friend who has a creative card and i have a monster card, i
almost identicle computeers except with the creative is faster and the
moster still get a lot better frame rates then the creative cards

That is because the monster drivers overclock the card by default.
