Could someon please bring me up to date?

    Hi all,

about 6 years ago i was already subscribed to ras (around the time GPL hit
the scene). Iwas following the discussions here and was especially e***d
about that sim that was worked on by the West rothers ( what's it name
gain?). Then in 2000 i suffered a stroke (age 25) and was taken out of
action for a good year and a half. Only now, that i got things together
again(or at least to some degree), i rejoined ras properly. Could someone
enlighten me what happened in the meantime in the sim world? Okay , Irealize
Papy seems to be dead, with NR2003 beigtheir final release, which i'm btw.
not soooo incredibly impressed by. Obviously RBR is now the hot thing
around. But what else happened? Especially to the West's thingie?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

> But what else happened?

1) The Wests are alive and well working on their independently funded sim.
They update their website regularly (ok, once a year) telling us which bit
of scenery they've polished recently. Their cat died, so did most of our
patience ;-) But there's always hope. In my case, I hope I still have some
eyesight left by the time they release some code.

2) Sierra disbanded Papyrus, but Kaemmer and some rich bloke bought back
the Papy codebase (or something like that) and there is hope for a new
masterpiece to rival GPL and N2003.

3) Live For Speed (LFS) is very promising and being developed in a similar
way to the Wests... only they have a product you can race with and pay for
in instalments as it develops. http://www.liveforspeed.net/

4) Other promising stuff is Netkar http://www.nkzone.com/ and, er...
another one I forget about. Memory like a seive.

5) The Simbin GTR sim looks like being the next Great Thing. Started out
as a mod for ISI's F1 sim.
enginehttp://www.bhmotorsports.com/awards/2/winners/208

6) Er... some other stuff. GPL refused to die, mainly ;-)
http://55and65.speedgeezers.com/gpl65/

7) RBR is well worth the price of entry. Great fun.

That'll do. I'm sure some proper experts will be along any moment to point
out any glaring omissions.

Glad your health has recovered enough for you to be able to take an
interest in this kind of thing again. Strokes can be really cruel, at any
age.

Great summary, Andrew!  I would only add that there's a lot of "Fast &
Furious" tuner-car, street-racing action in console games nowadays.

Thhanks for all the info. Yes, Ialready heard of (and tried) Netkar, which
is a remarkable piece of code  from a single guy ...

So, I'm back on the track, even though i can only do it with my right hand
and right foot (left side remained paralyzed). Okay, so driving around the
Glen in GPL that way, i got down to 1:11.05 yesterday. Next goal: Taking
another good 5 seconds off that time to reach my "before stroke" PB LOL

Good to hear that Mr Kaemmer's genius seems to have survived  Papy'decease
then. Rally-wise, CMR2 is still the most fun for me. Can't wait for a DEMO
of RBR, cause i don't yet have a DVD drive to install the full version. Oh
well, maybe I'll try the warez to bridge a couple of weeks 'til i get one.

And oh yeah! What's the full name of that thing that is refered to as "GTR"
around gere? And is there a demo?

Thanks again...

Cheers!

Andrew, an excellant summary.

Just add - Checkout www.bhmotorsports.com  They have the GTR demo linked as
well and the majority of every driving game listed
http://www.bhmotorsports.com/sim

Plus don't forget that the Wests initial efforts resulted in Total Immersion
Racing, which wasn't that bad after the mod community got to it, but it
wasn't what we'd hoped for.

And finally the Wests had a finger in Rally Trophy but I never found out
what they did.

Andi.

Glad to know that a sim racer can return to the fold :)...

Andrew's post was very comphrensive - am I blind, or did he completely
leave out EA's F1-2002 and F1 Championship 99-02 ;)?
Good luck finding a new copy of F1C, but there are a bunch of really
great mods for it already (PrototypeC, SCC, ETCC), with more to come -
check out http://forums.rscnet.org for more info.

GTR is the commercial followup to Simbin Development Team's great
series of free FIA-GT mods for the EA F1 games - its the only reason I
still have F1-2002 on my hard drive.  There is a demo - sorry I don't
have a link handy.  It's only a Lister or Morgan that you can drive
around Spa alone, but it's pretty top stuff.

Best of luck!

Forgot to mention - my copy of RBR came on 2 CD's (in a DVD case) - I
got it from gogamer.com.  Sounds like that may be the version w/o the
steering bug in replays.
