Voodoo 5 owner seeks advice

by Mark » Tue, 04 Feb 2003 00:45:38

I have been running F1 2002 (with a view to running GTR2002 when I get
broadband!) and am considering a video card upgrade.

My system is:
Athlon 1.2GHz
512Mb SDRAM
Voodoo5 AGP

In F1 2002 with most details turned down or off (shadows and lighting are
OFF) I am getting 23fps starting at the back of the grid at Monza and then
typically 28-40fps during the race. I am NOT using any FSAA.

1) Is a video card upgrade worth it? Would I see much improvement if I went
to a GF Ti4200 or Radeon 9500 (128Mb) with my Athlon 1.2? I have found both
of these going for 112.

2) I also run GPL and really love the V5 with 4xFSAA for GPL. How would
these cards compare to the V5 for GPL?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In this review of F1 2001, both the Voodoo5 and Radeon 8500 were used. The
8500 was a lot faster and both of the cards you're looking at are faster
than the 8500. It might be worth checking it out.

In GPL I run a Ti4400 with FSAA and it  looks  great. I still have my V5500,
but the only time I really miss it is when I play older games that only run
in low resolutions. The 5500's FSAA makes them look great. In newer games at
higher resolutions, the FSAA in the radeon or Ti series is just as good.
Switching cards  could give you 20 or more frames per second.

Thanks for the advice

Good review of F12001 by the way.

I noticed that F1 2002 has a significant drop in frame rate compared to F1
2001 on my system. Is this due to increased modelling detail in F1 2002 or
is it not optimised so well for the V5 (or both)?

Find a Ti4200 with 128DDR more bang for the buck and they are under $150 and
will be very good for most if not all games, a nice monitor really makes a
difference also but thats another story.

Maybe both. It  shouldn't be too far off though.
