Looking for a new game to play I thought I would take a chance on
Codemaster's Indycar Series. I've read some forums where some have
dismissed this as an arcade racer. My opinion is that it is more sim
than arcade and is not so great because it was released unfinished.
The lack of mirrors really threw me a curve ball. You can't play this
game very well without mirrors at all. And the black abyss that is
called a***pit is just dismal. But some things about this game are
really good. For one, the sense of speed is incredible - the best of
any racing sim I have played. The driving model feels pretty decent
once you tame the controller settings down but it's still a bit
twitchy for my liking. With a bit more work this could have been a
good sim - a shame that it was released in this state though. Oh well,
next.

>The driving model feels pretty decent

That's actually 1 of 2 things that killed it for me:

1. no multiplayer, and in the absence of that, really crappy AI (the
AI themselves race well, they're just about 5-10mph off the pace of a
human driver at most tracks)

2. the poor physics model, particularly aero - it is impossible to
create a car that oversteers at high speed

Don't do MP.

I haven't played with the tweaking of car setups yet but OTB it is
better than some racing games I have played. It's better than TIR or
SCGT. I know it needs work but I'm just saying that with a bit more
work it could have been quite a decent game.

I understand that Codemasters is coming out with a sequel to this game
called "Indycar Series 2004" this June.
I've seen references to it being a PS2 game, and perhaps Xbox, but not sure
about a PC version.

It's possible they'll port it over for the PC later on, as they did with
this one?
Let's just hope they include a paintkit or car editor, plus a fully complete
***pit with mirrors in the sequel.

As for multiplayer... I don't do MP either so that's not an issue for me.
In fact, with regards to that... I notice too often that game reviewers will
take points away or give a lousy review to a title simply because it doesn't
include MP or perhaps a limited or lousy MP.

I wonder how many folks around RAS actually do take the time to race over
the internet vs. those of us who don't have the time to spare and would
rather just jump in and race or even hotlap when we have a few spare minutes
here and there.

I don't want to have to buy it again to get what should have been in the
original release. They should provide a free patch to fix it up, if they
pull a Ubisoft on us then I won't buy it no matter what.

Actually, racing games are the ONLY games I play MP on the internet with.  I
don't play anything elso online, even though I have several that are capable.
I also play Diablo II on b.net, but it's in solo games.
