Won.Net - Here we go again?

by Larr » Sun, 11 Feb 2001 18:22:50

Ok, once upon a time we had NROS.  A nice little place for online racers to
hang their hats (and heads, depending on how the night went :)  ).

Then, deciding that making money was a bad thing, the hosting company,
decided to go 'free' and renamed themselves Pogo.Net.  They also dropped
NROS, and our hat-rack went away.

Then comes Won.Net.  Not NROS, but at least it was online racing.  We got
used to it.

Along comes N4, probably the most important racing simulator (ok, maybe
second to GPL - Leave me alone!) to come along, ever.  We even have rankings
again!

But, wait!  Now, Won.Net has become Flipside.com, yet ANOTHER *** site
based mainly on free online games.

Are we in trouble again?

I have to wonder, especially since all of the Won.Net links they provide are
DEAD!

The Total Entertainment Network was loosing tons of money with the NROS.
This changes totally your point, as it wasn't really a good thing
business-wise.  They had to change their philosophy because they were in
deep trouble.  Do you see much of those pay-to-play network anymore? With
MPlayer, MSN Zone, Sony Station, TEN just couldn't cope up with the others.
Hardly any publicity, they had to rely totally on their small number of
consumers, which anyway was 75% made of simracers.

Flipside = Won.  Won had all those free online games.  Just wait until they
put up the real website and all the stuff.

Points taken.

However, 'change' in this area has never worked out to our advantage, yet :)

BTW...

I know TEN lost money on NROS.  To this day, I still do not see HOW this was
possible.

I would love to see the balance sheet these people had.  I'm no business
major, but I am fairly confident I could have figured out why it wasn't
making money and how to fix it.

[history lesson snipped]

Flipside.com recently had a BIG fallout with Interplay due to Starfleet
Command 2.
Apparently Flipside.com backed out of a deal with Interplay to provide
play servers
AFTER the game has gone gold. Interplay eventually set up their own
servers, but
the damage was already done. All my manuals on SFC2 still says
Flipside.com and
all that.

Oh, I was meaning to mention this but forgot to.

This is a VERY good reason for IRF to continue to live, IMHO.  Just because
we have an 'official' method of online racing doesn't mean that we don't
need an alternative method.

I personally hope that the author of IRF keeps updating it and fixes it up
to work with the release version of N4.
