we have two pc's side by side and want to race each other. is this

Definitly possible. You need and null modem cable which plugs
into your spare comm port . Try to get one with both the 15
and 25 pin connectors on each end.
Depending on the game all you need to do is plug it into the
spare comm port of each machine, tell the game what port is
being used and go multiplaying.
