Thrustmaster NASCAR Super Sport $24.99 @ Tiger Direct

by jbo.. » Sat, 04 Mar 2000 04:00:00

The Thrustmaster NASCAR Super Sport is a great little wheel -- much
better pedals than the Charger, and a better overall package than the
NASCAR Pro (I have both a Super Sport and a NASCAR Pro, so I can say
this from an informed point of view).  This is basically the same wheel
as the new NASCAR Digital, minus the digital part, and Tiger Direct has
them for only $24.99 -- check it out at:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Definitely a bargain if you're in the market for a wheel (or a second
wheel, for that matter).  Those of you who have been wanting a wheel
but couldn't afford the price of entry should jump on this.

FYI, I've bought from Tiger Direct before, and they have a good
customer service department, and they're pretty quick on their shipping.

Thrustmaster NASCAR Super Sport $24.99 @ Tiger Direct

This is interesting.  We sold three of these wheels and all three were
returned.  The common complaints were a loose, sloppy feel to the wheel
after minimal use, and unacceptable, uncorrectable jitter.  The sloppiness I
can only attribute the the lack of metal bushings anywhere in the assembly
coupled with some rather large, strong customers going through successive
bouts of GPL opposite-lock panic.  The jitter seems to occur when a sound
card with a digital gameport is used in conjunction with DirectX7.
Upgrading to DirectX7a has not helped.  The wheel seems stable and happy
enough when used with an older analog gameport, no spikes or jitters.
Checking the steering pot with an ohm meter (sorry, it's all I've got)
indicates that the pot itself is not of very high quality, the values jump
around and the linearity leaves something to be desired, it looks like an
average, crappy, noisy pot.  Mind you, I've used crappy-pot wheels before
without the jitter problems, but always on old sound cards with analog
gameports.

I would very much like to know what system(s) you are using this wheel on,
what kind of gameport, and what version of DirectX.  It's been a while, but
if memory serves these wheels were working just fine with DirectX6.  Any
info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

                        Doug

PS: The pedals are OK.  They're not as bad as the ACT pedals, but I still
haven't used anything that compares with the throw and feel of my trusty old
T2 pedals.

Thrustmaster NASCAR Super Sport $24.99 @ Tiger Direct

Doug,

I'm currently using the Super Sport with my "slow" computer for head-to-
head action with Viper Racing and DTR -- the system is an AMD K6-266
with Windows 98, DirectX 7 (not sure if I've upgraded to 7a yet), and a
generic Soundblaster-compatible sound card.  I've also used it on my
"fast" system, which is equipped with a PDPI L4 digital game port, but
I don't know if I had DX7 installed at the time.

The Super Sport's wheel and steering shaft does "wobble" a bit compared
to my TSW and TSW2 rigs, but I think it seems more solid than my NASCAR
Pro wheel.  Frankly, after using the TSW products, ALL plastic wheels
seem somewhat "fragile" to me, but I haven't found the Super Sport to
be any worse than the Mad Catz Andretti wheel, the Logitech Wingman, or
the ACT Labs RS wheels.

The output is pretty solid on my Super Sport wheel, even with a generic
sound card game port -- I will try to hook it up to my other computer
sometime this weekend to try to shed some light on the compatibility
issue with digital game ports and DX7.  I'll let you know what I find
on thst.

Hope this helps a bit.

Jim Dombrowsk

Thrustmaster NASCAR Super Sport $24.99 @ Tiger Direct

I was using a Super Sport before I got my Act Labs Force Feedback. The pots
in the TM wheel were crap. TM is notorious for good gear for the money but
with crappy pots. I've replaced dozens in my TM flight gear though out the
years. I had to open and clean out the pot a few times before I finally I
ordered a replacement pot and the thing worked flawlessly. I'm not sure if I
just got lucky and got a good one or they found some different pots that
work much better. I was glad to pass down to my brother a fine working
wheel. Miss the pedals though.

Doug,

FYI, I've been using the Super Sport on my "fast" computer for about a
week now, with both my generic sound card joystick port AND my PDPI
card (switching back-and-forth, that is).  I'm running DX7.0a and
Windows 98, and it works fine -- VERY stable, too (even with just the
sound card).

Hope this helps a bit.
