I know this probably isn't the right place to put this post, but this is
the only newsgroup I read.  I need some help with ftp.  I used to use
Netscape 3.0 but I recently started using Internet Explorer 3.0.
Here is my problem....I have been trying to get game demos off of PC
List, but everytime the file is at an ftp site, when it tries to connect,
it says it can't because the site returned extended information.  Does
anyone know what this means or how to solve it?  The only time I can
download a file is if it is at a HTTP:// site.  It really narrows down my
choices.  Thanks for any help and sorry for posting here.

The message you're getting about 'Extended Information' just means that the
server has reached the maximum number of simultaneous users.  The only real
solution is to just keep trying until you get in.  Other than busy servers,
I have no trouble downloading from FTP sites with IE3.0.

Not that this matters, but do you have the patch for IE3.0 (it addresses
security issues not FTP)?  You can get it from:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com//msdownload/ieinstall/update.exe

It will survive. At least this isn't a 'Get Rich Quick' message.

Excellent choice!

It probably has reached it's maximum number of ANONYMOUS users.  Also, some
FTP servers check to see if you are sending an actual EMAIL address as the
password. It doesn't have to be your REAL email address, but it must be in
the format of an email address.

Example:  I use Serv-U as my occasional FTP server.  If I tell Serv-U to
check anonymous email addresses, I can not log on to my FTP site with MSIE

to login with this checked, Serv-U will not let you login because what MSIE
3.0 sends as an email address is in the incorrect format.

Solution:  Get / use a program that was designed as a FTP program, such as
Cute FTP or WS_Ftp, just to name a few.  These programs can run in the
background while you roam around with your browser.  The transfers are, on
both my systems, much faster using an FTP program as well.  Also, if you
register Cute Ftp, if your download aborts ( gee, that never happens!! )
you can restart where you left off.  Tell me that doesn't beat doing it
from your browser!

Hey  !
You burnt the following into my screen :

You're jokin' ?!

>Example:  I use Serv-U as my occasional FTP server.  If I tell Serv-U to

>to login with this checked, Serv-U will not let you login because what MSIE

And you like the MSIE ?
In Netscape you can specify your own Email-adress that will be given to FTP-servers !
So don't hype the MS-product, use a real one !
Or Netscape :-) !!!!!!!!!!!!!

And please all messages via Email back to the Author too !!!
Thanks !
