Best upgrade investment?

I started with an Athlon Classic 650 w/ an Viper 2 and 128 ram.  First, add
the Geforce 2 (Creative) then I upgraded to 256 ram and have noticed an
improvement in the stability of the framrates (not an increase in the max,
but more consistent Not dropping from 40 to 20 but more staying between
35-40).  My next upgrade is the cpu.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions.  Since I plan to keep this mobo
another year or so I think I'm going to go with the CPU for now.  That will
give all the DDR mobos time to mature for my next upgrade.

Best upgrade investment?

Just curious what everyone thought would be the best upgrade investment for
my current PC.  I just got $150 for some old PC equipment and plan to
upgrade something in the following system:

Asus K7M w/600 Athlon
128 PC100 RAM
16MB TNT2 (non-ultra)
Sidewinder Precision Racing Wheel

I am considering the following options:

1) Replace the 600 Athlon with a 850-900 T-bird
2) Replace the TNT2 with a GeForce2 MX
3) Replace the MS Wheel with an Act-Labs Force RS

Any opinions on which would be the best way to spend my $150?  BTW, I mainly
play GPL and NASCAR 4 and am actually pretty happy with the performance I am
getting in both.  Just had the cash and thought I would upgrade something.

Thanks,

The MX will not give you that bigga boost over your TNT2 - at least not for the
money.  You'd be better off adding a few more dollars to your budget and getting
a full-fledged GF card (or wait until GF3 hits and all the GF2'd drop in price).

I love my MSPRW and haven't found another wheel that feels as nice - especially
a gear-driven FF wheel.  The PRW is just SMOOTH and precise.

RAM is always a plus and you would definitely see a difference by going to 256
or even 384.  Memory is ridiculously cheap right now.  This would be your best
value since it would help you in EVERYTHING - not just your two favorite games.
If you can reduce or eliminate the swapfile in Windows everything runs better.

Pumping up your CPU is also a good idea - especially if you can go to a 800+ for
$150

I've been real pleased with my Geforce 2 MX.  The T-bird would probably work
out nice as well.

You've got the right order, especially if the TNT2 is an Ultra. Just change
the MX to a GTS or V5500.

For those two games, a faster CPU would be nice.  Can you run a full
field?  On the other hand, a Slot A Athlon is kind of a dead end.  You
may eventually want a PC133 or DDR system with a 133 MHz FSB, which
would require a Socket A system.

The biggest thing recommending the video card is hardware transform &
lighting.  A few people on this newsgroup have reported substantial
improvements in N4.

Finally, I agree that RAM is the best value right now.  You can get
256 MB CL2 PC133 from Crucial for $100, in preparation for a
full-fledged upgrade at a later date.  But again, buying PC133 now may
inhibit you from buying DDR later.

IMHO, the TNT2 card needs to go...

Huh?

The MX cards run nearly as fast as the original GeForce DDR cards, and
that's a HELL of a lot faster than a TNT2 non-ultra card :)

Best upgrade investment?

by Larr » Mon, 19 Mar 2001 06:16:12

I covered my ***and did both :)

First, I went for a 1.2 DDR T-Bird (from an 800Mhz Athlon Slot-a).  It did

had a GeForce DDR.

All of a sudden, I had a buyer for my GeForce DDR _if_ I decided to upgrade
that too.  Well, shit :)

I couldn't stand it, so I went out and got a Hercules GeForce II GTS Pro.

Now, I'm getting around 60fps at 1600X1200, 16 bit, with everything in the
game cranked.

You know, there's definetely some pleasure in knowing that you have the
fastest 'normal' computer that you can buy at one particular time :)

Too bad it only lasts, what, 40 days ?

Like that New-Card smell.

Now, if only ASUS would fix the serious BIOS problems with the A7V133 and
Win2K...
