I think I've just discovered the reason for that almost intangible
feeling of "wrong-ness".

Get up to speed, pop it in neutral and roll...

Just like in other sims, and real life, it's not as easy to notice elevation
changes from in the car view as it is from a stationary view at a distance.

Use the TV views and you'll really be able to notice the elevation changes
on a section of track where you're trying  your experiment. It's likely to
be much steeper than you think. I tried it at what seemed like a relatively
flat section, and my car ended up slowing down rather quickly, and then
rolled backward. Turned out I was really at the bottom of a gradual uphill
section of track.

Nothing wrong with the physics.

Felt OK to me, maybe a bit too much momentum in Neutral but not too terribly
overdone IMHO.

BTW I tried this at the last section before the final left hairpin turn, and
I was using the manual shifting hack in ral.cfg, in case that has anything
to do with it, I was able to coast the car around the hairpin but then it
lost speed going up the next rise and actually came to a stop and coasted back
down into the hairpin.

RC2000 with the patch + manual shifting + LWFF wheel is feeling pretty good
and fun to me. I think comparing the physics model of it with GPL is a bit
of an exaggeration, it still feels a little too hard to get the back end of the
car loose, but maybe that's because we are driving the Seat FWD, it definitely
feels fun though, glad they fixed the weight of the car in the patch, the
amount of air you can catch feels a lot more realistic than it did before the
patch.

I'm looking forward to the release, should be tricky to race in snow and other
surfaces like tarmac etc.

The only thing I really don't like about this game is the force
feedback (on a Logitech FF wheel). I can't detect any modeling of the
cars wheels/traction or wieght shifting in the FF implementation. I
hate it when they do that, might as well not bother with FF at all.

Otherwise seems like a lot of fun. I'll buy it, even though I wish the
FF was better.

How about RC2000 vs Colin McRae ????

CMR is nice but the FF isn't very good

Funny you should mention it! :) I just posted a short back-to-back
driving comparison on my CMR2 website. Look for the 'Racing School'
article link. Its at:

Yup.  All I felt with my LWFF was a bit of "rumble".  I expected, in a rally
sim, to feel each jolt as the tires hit something and jerked my wheel left
and right.  Not to mention, feeling the wheel become very sluggish when
going though the mud, becoming very light when airborne, etc.

Hey Tim,

Haven't tried your suggestion but I also find that the feel of the car is
all wrong.  I don't like the fact that if the back steps out and you apply
opposite lock the car immediately snaps back into shape.  It's like the rear
of the car has no mass.   The cars in RAC had exactly the same trait, and
that's why I sold it to a friend (keyboard player) who didn't mind.
The car feels sluggish now that they've added weight (I never really had a
problem with it before).  I can't find a decent setting for my TMF1 either.
I've had to set it to combined rather than seperate axis (I tried all the
seperate axis options and none worked for me) and the steering is too
twitchy.  If I have a dead zone it's exacly that - move the wheel, nothing,
then wham!  Should be level of linearity as in GPL, not a completely dead
zone.   I don't recall RAC having these 'advanced' settings - you just chose
a wheel as your controller and it all felt good (to me and my T2 anyway...)

I'm -very- disappointed.  I kind of enjoyed the pre-patch demo and hoped
that improvements were on the way but I have to say that on this showing
I've decided I'll not be buying.

I was really looking forward to this one, too.

Dammit.

Yes, agreed, the FF is pretty rudimentary after being spoiled by GPL.

I do think I notice the wheel resistance get lighter as you get going
faster and faster (which makes sense based on my own dirt road driving),
and also when you getting alot of air under the car i.e. when driving
fast through those those ditches.

The one thing they really need to fix is how the FF reacts when you flip
the car and are upside down waiting for it to flip back over, on my LWFF
the wheel jerks left and right randomly and hard for no reason during this
upside down time, hopefully I won't be upside down too often but....

I was never able to try out the FF in CMR since I didn't have my LWFF
wheel at the time, if I can make some room on one of my HD's this
weekend maybe I'll reinstall it and see.

Hmm, the wheel actually gets lighter when you run through mud, because of
the reduced friction to the surface. Otherwise I totally agree with you.

Yeah, when I start to think about what they *could* do with FF in a
raly sim it's even more disapointing.
