Viper using "-safe" doesnt work

by Destroy - Derek Stru » Thu, 15 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I believe it was Grant that found this out but I cant get '-safe' to
work.

Its suppose to give you some more laps some where in the demo,
correct?

This is exactly what is in my shortcut normally:

"E:\SIERRA\Viper Racing Demo\Viper Racing Demo.exe"

So where does the '-safe' go?

These two dont work:

"E:\SIERRA\Viper Racing Demo\Viper Racing Demo.exe" - safe
"E:\SIERRA\Viper Racing Demo\Viper Racing Demo.exe" -safe

Hell nothing seems to work.

If I do this:
"E:\SIERRA\Viper Racing Demo\Viper Racing Demo.exe -safe"

Then the shortcut doesnt work at all. As far as I can tell '-safe'
doesnt do squat.

Am I doing something stupid here? Only one flying lap really sucks.
Wish my pre-ordered copy would hurry up and get here. :)

Thanks for any help.

no no i didn't find it, i just saw it mentioned at THe Pits when
i went to download v2.2 demo. please place the credit over there :)

yeah it allows you to pick more laps. (3, 8 or 20).

this is what i used. BUT, i have only tried it with the v2.0
demo. the v2.2 demo may have been altered so that it no longer
functions.
hmmm.
let me try it right now....
<trying>
oh, it pops up with a message window saying
"Our apologies, Can't start game."

bummer!:)

Hi All,  I got it to work with a simple .bat file I called "Viper.bat"  I
edited the .bat file to read as follows:

      Viper.exe -safe

Note, that I had to rename the "Viper Racing Demo.exe to "Viper.exe" to
satisfy the dos limitation to long file names.  Just changed my desktop
shortcut to the Viper.bat from the Viper.exe and it works great for me.  You
can run the track in reverse as well and get a preview of what tracks will
come with the full release.  Very nice.  BTW, it works on the version 2.2 as
well.

Hope this helps

The 2.2 demo doesn't support the -safe flag.  But you can edit the
options.cfg to achieve the same effect.

How in the hell?! I tryed your suggestion using a .bat file. It still
doesnt work. Still comes up with a "Our Appoligies blah blah bin
error"

Also, does the force feedback work in this demo 2.2 or 2.0? I just got
my Wingman force and I cant dont get any FF efx out of the game? I
have checked the option in the Controls section.

Viper using "-safe" doesnt work

Don't know that I did anything different than anyone would do to make the
.bat file.  I thought I was using the version 2.2 as I downloaded the new
version (or so it said) from The Pits link.  After reinstalling the demo I
renamed the Viper Racing Demo.exe to Viper.exe and created a .bat file and
edited it read:

Viper.exe -safe

I then executed it and recevied a black and white "viper racing" startup
screen.  I was then able to run up to 20 laps on Silverdale both forward and
reverse.  I could also see all the other tracks that will be available (not
able to access them of course) in the full version.

I'll have to check again to see if the new demo I downloaded from The Pits
is the 2.2, sorry I just assumed it was.  My apologies if this doesn't work
for others, does for me.

I'm running Windows98 with a Voodoo2 if that makes any difference.

Viper using "-safe" doesnt work

by David Turma » Sat, 17 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Mr. Broske, at the risk of sounding insane, I must tell you that I have
version 2.2.  When I start the demo using just the Viper Racing Demo.exe I
first receive a multi color screen with the picture of the Viper Car, then I
get the main screen which reads "October Demo 2.2".   Using just the .exe I
get one track and only two laps. However, when I start the game using the
aforementioned .bat file I made with the "safe" flag, I first receive a
black and white logo with a snake's head which reads "viper" racing, then I
get a main screen that reads as follows, "ALPHA 2, CONFIDENTIAL".   I then
get the three race length options 2,8, and 20 laps and a menu that allows me
to view the screen previews of the other tracks.  I've only the one .exe in
the demo and it's the version 2.2.  How do you explain my being able to
access the lap options and the confidential screen by using the safe flag if
it doesn't work with version 2.2.

I'm sorry if it doesn't work with others, but it does for me.  If anyone
wants more information, I'd be glad to email them the .bat file, and compare
version numbers of the .exe.

Viper using "-safe" doesnt work

by David Turma » Sat, 17 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Well, I think I've found the answer as to why I'm able to get the -safe flag
to work with my version 2.2 demo.  Thanks to information I've received from
those who know more than I do about such things, it seems that when I
installed the version 2.2, I did so over the top of the previous version.
In doing so, I retained one file that was with the first version and not
version 2.2, "debug.bin".  Yes I'm running Version 2.2, but I've also have
the debug.bin file still in the demo directory which, I'm told, allows
the -safe flag to work.

So, I'm not insane, or have some weird system, and it explains why others
can't get it to work.  Who knew!!!  I learn something new everyday.

Please send me the debug.bin or let me know I place where I can get it.
BTW you don't need to rename the file, you can just refer to it by its DOS file
name VIPERR~1.EXE.
BTW2 you can always use the test mode off the garage to get 20 laps and they go
on the best times as well.
