I've played GPL, F1GP,GP2,GP3 and EA F1 1999(first one).  I wasn't
impressed with GP3 and F1'99.

Of course GPL is the best (or was when I played it)

Aside from GPL, what's the best modern day F1 sim?

F1 Challenge 99-02 from Electronic Arts.  Developed by ISI, the same guys
who did Sports Car GT.  Same guys who did the other EA F1 games too, but F1C
is the last and by far the best of them.

GPL of course.  You just need to set your system clock to 1967.

" F1 Challange '99-'02 " - Hands down.  The multiplayer *still* isn't as
good as GPL which is a bit frustrating but the good news is that it wallops
GPL in every other department.

Except for the modelled era, replay and user interface departments,
maybe ? ;)

Seriously, F1C '99-'02 is very very good and quite ***ive. And the
question was about modern F1 anyway.

For me the F1C was a disappointment. I guess I just can't find the fun in
driving without sliding ;) The physics engine is most likely better than in
GPL, but it's still no GPL. I think I'll wait for the F1C mods...

I'm not sure how you can say F1C was a disappointment....What were you
hoping for? - a quasi-F1 with sliding cars?
If I want sliding, I'll race sprint cars.   Tarmac racing is about being 'on
the edge' of grip - at least for me - probably why GPL has never really
floated my boat (even though I raced in a GPL league for 2 years!)

I dunno, GPL still has a better tire model, or at least I should say,
at least it's possible to overheat the tires (you can't really wear
them out in either sim).  F1C is a vast improvement over f1 2002, but
considering the importance of tire selection, tire pressure, and
camber in real life and the complete lack of importance they hold in
the sim I really can't go overboard praising it anymore.  If the tire
model were fixed I'd give it another go for sure.  I have to be wary
about any sim where I can push 100% for an entire GP with full
negative camber on one set of soft tires.

GPL doesn't even model tyre wear.

I should add that you're right though and the beta testers should have their
asses kicked for allowing such an obvious blunder.  Luckily it doesn't
really affect gameplay - it just means that tyres don't wear out. GP1
modelled tyre wear better.

Yep, but due to the overheating the effect is nearly the same - I
noticed I definitely was having trouble keeping up the same cornering
speeds after ten laps on the Glen, when I was trying to push it. It may
be a bit primitive (heck, it doesn't even model *** debris next to
the racing line, sheesh  ;) but at least it definitely does penalize
pushing too hard for too long.

That's true.  I think GTR2002 probably has the king of tyre models at the
moment.

IMHO F1C is probably the best Sim that I have used so far.
It is different to GPL obviously, but as a modern day Sim, I feel it is the
best so far.
Tyres are a big issue. I find that cold tyres seem to have pretty much the
same grip as warm ones, and they do not seem to wear out.
The other problem that I have found is that tampering with the setup doesn't
seem to have much effect on the cars handling or your lap times.
You can pretty much jump in the standard car, adjust the high end gearing,
and rip off a scorcher. I have never seen this happen on any other sim.
Usually it takes ages of adjusting your setup before you get anywhere near
scorching times.
Other than that, it just needs more work on the online code ( steal Papy's
Code ) and it would be a ripper.
