gtr - is it money wasted!

Ok i love gtr's both demos and only can afford to buy 1 to 2 games a year.
But i would only buy gtr if the online multiplayer was as good as LFS or
gpl, because thats the only reason you would buy a game like gtr.  If its
anything like f1 chalange i would not buy it (that was a total waste of
money), so i want to know from people who have the game what they think of
the multiplay..

Can't comment on how GTR compares to LFS however it is sort of comparable to
GPL's. Certainly its much better than the F1C series multiplayer. There is a
built in VROC like service where you log into a chat room where various
people post their servers for play. This seems to be fairly well populated
though the quality of the race will depend on the quality of the connect and
the quality of the people that are racing there. There are , I think, some
Simbin operated servers listed there as well that seem to have decent
connect. A LAN/direct IP option is also available which is what I'm most
familiar with since the league I'm in runs with that. For the most part that
also works OK though we have experienced some oddities (generally with the
pace lap and safety car issues). If you're limited to 1-2 games and sim
driving is your thing I'd say that GTR offers good replay value. The modding
community has also started to serve GTR and there are a number of mod tracks
and paint jobs available now with more to come. One thing to keep in mind is
that GTR requires a fairly strong machine to play at the highest graphic
settings.

If you hated F1C multiplayer, you are going to HATE GTR multiplayer,
thats all there is to it.

GTr online is suspect at best; ask anyone who has tried to run a league with
it. When it does work, for sure, it is a wicked experience; but try running
a race at estoril; you'll be met with track mismatch errors, for starters -
then there's the weather bug - on the line, the weather will change from
monsoon to dry in about five seconds; not to mention the pace car that will,
3 times out of 5 turn into a wrecking machine; coupled with the lack of
dedicated servers, lack of reporting options ... well, put it this way -  if
you like pick-up races from the lobby, then gtr is fine - but if you're
expecting any kind of online experience like N2003 or GPL, you will be sadly
dissapointed. It has potential though; when it works, it really is all that
and more. Sadly, that doesn;t happen too often as those leagues brave enough
to give it a go are starting to realise.

GTR is great offline, but online it just does not have the fundamentals
covered.

Wait for rFactor. Try the demo in the meantime.

I believe GTR is still a good investment. The offline game, once you've
adjusted the AI to your preference, is as solid as GPL's.

The online game does have some limitations as other posters have pointed
out. These became very apparent to me these last 2 weekends with the release
of version 1.30. 1.30 has temporarily cost our league its main server due to
its requirement for a CD in the drive (the server presently does not have a
CD drive) and we were forced to utilize member machines. The member machines
were acting both as server and player machine and this double duty, coupled
with a smaller bandwidth availability, led to  a number of problems
including the killer pace car and warping cars showing up. Once the numbers
fell to 8 or so the warps were almost gone (don't know if the killer pace
car issue goes away). I do know that when we ran a dedicated server on a
high bandwidth connect and version 1.23 these problems were just about non
existant even with 20+ online. This points to the problem being high CPU
utilization and swamped bandwidth rather than any fundamental defect in the
netcode. From hints that SImbin have dropped it appears that they have some
sort of dedicated server response out sometime early in May.

So you might be thinking "Big deal, how does this help me now?" The way I
see it you can wait around for however long it takes rFactor or FIRST's
offering to show up (and hope they live up to expectations) or you can buy
GTR and go racing in modern sportscars right away in a sim that will
definitly challenge you. For online racing it will require that you pick and
choose the servers you're playing on. A bit of research (AKA Asking people)
in the Simbin lobby should help you find some that fill your racing needs.
Don't try to get into the servers that already have 20 people on unless you
know they can handle the load. Simbin itself has several dedicated servers
up that ought to be stable.

Or you could keep playing GPL or paying for LFS.

Your call :)

Last I checked the multi had plenty of issues - starts screwing up, very
non league friendly and a nightmare to set up servers for apparently.

I'd hold onto your money and wait until you start to hear good things
about it in here if I was you - they apparently have a patch in the works to
sort all this but since it's already been released internationally as
basically alpha code I put it in the category of "beleive it when I see it".

If you remember Cart Precision Racing then GTR is basically almost in
that category (nothing is as bad as CPR though) - it's got great potential
but if the weak links aren't removed then it just a frustrating peice of
junk.
