Where do you go to escape the children?

by Joe L » Wed, 21 Mar 2001 12:48:06

Most of this I wrote last night but decided not to post it. It may have
been "one of those days" but after several identical races tonight I am
certain that last night was all I thought it was and I imagined nothing.
There is a significant population of "drivers" who apparently consider
themselves incapable of developing legitimate skills and so, not wanting to
see others do what they cannot have decided to wreck the game for anyone and
everyone they can reach.  I am reminded of the times I was babysitting my
infant grandson. He, like these other children, giggle and gibber and drool
over the same "joke" again and again and again night after night after
night......
I imagine they consider themselves clever, inventive and endlessly
entertaining but their totally predictable unchanging routine is becoming
incredibly boring to me. I have seen their "one joke show" enough but it
seems it is the only thing playing on Sierra.com, at least in those races
not password protected. The majority of people there seem to be trying their
best to have a legitimate race but the supply of Brats seems large enough to
ensure that will seldom happen. It's not a total loss as I am developing
some skill at dodging spinning cars but I would like to find out where the
***s hang out so I can play NASCAR 4 instead of whatever they call what is
going on at Sierra.com.
For those inclined my experience of last night is detailed below. For as
many of these brats as seem to be out there I am sure most of you are
thoroughly familiar with the show they put on night after night after night
after..........
If the forlorn story raises a bit of sympathy would you  please tell a
poor suffering rookie where the ***s are? While I have much to learn I can
track a reasonably straight and predictable line and have no ego problem
with getting the hell out of the way when the leaders lap me and do not at
all mind riding the wall or diving into the infield if that is what it takes
to give them a clear path.. If I do take out some cars I guarantee it will
be by accident.and not design. If that happens I will be glad to stand by
after the race to take whatever instruction/correction/ass-chewing those who
I wiped out care to give me.
Anyhow, to the straw that broke this camel's back.
============================================================================
======

I have been at this on-line racing thing for about 2 weeks now.
Certainly not long enough to be able to make firm judgements but long enough
to get first impressions.
When I first got on-line I posted a message here concerning my rookie
lack of skills and asking how I can get practice while not screwing things
up for the vets. Now, after a couple of weeks I wonder why I ever gave a
damn. Today was the crown. I started 6 races tonight and finished none of
them. On 4 of those 6 I was one of about 3/4 of the field that never
compleated the second lap but were victims of huge pileups. Looking at the
film in each of these 4 and trying to figure out what started the pileup the
car responsible was obvious. In each of these 4 there was a car near the
front on the inside that made a sudden veer from what had been a straight
track, striking the outside car and sending bouncing off the wall and
sliding into the path of the trailing cars.  Perhaps my eye is untrained but
the sharp veering from a straight track taken by the car responsible looked
to me like it was intentional. One other thing I noticed was that in each of
these 4 incidents the car causing the pile-up continued on without appearent
harm leaving the wreckage of most of the field behind him. Perhaps I am
paranoid and am takeing an unfortunate string of similar "accidents" and
forming suspicions but to my rookie mind it appears that there is a
significant percentage of "racers" that have developed ways of taking out
the competition while leaving themselves intact.
Of the two remaining races there was one where I started at the tail end
of the pack and managed to avoid yet a 5th pileup. Simply surviving put me i
n 4th, I thanked God and continued on. Much to my ammazement I found myself
gaining on the three in front and after a struggle lasting several laps, I
passed them. Wether by luck or skill I cannot say but there I was in front
for the first time! I didnt lead by much but lead I did!!! I  held that lead
for 2 laps and I was beginning to even believe a win might be possible when,
in the middle of a straighaway, I suddenly found myself heading toward the
infield and bouncing off a wall. When I heard "You alright? Looks like the
front end is bent up." I knew all hope was gone and I exited the race to
study the film.
Question 1  was what happened to me. The film showed me in front
with the second place car inside. In the middle of that straightaway he
suddenly veered from a straight track and brushed my rear with his bumper. I
went into the infield, he continued on without appearent harm.
Question 2, What caused that earlier pile-up I managed to dodge? Like
before it was caused by an inside car veering from a straight track striking
the outside car and bouncing it off the wall. Also like before the car that
caused the pile-up escaped harm and continued the race leaving the wreckage
behind him.
Would anyone care to make a guess which car caused the pile-up? If you
guessed the same car that sent me to the wall you are correct. Now, anyone
want to guess who won?
Mabe Im paranoid but  tonight combined with similar "accidents" other
nights seems to be establishing a pattern. There seems to be a number of
cheaters sufficiently large to almost guarantee at least one showing up in
most races.

Might be an idiot kid, but it also sounds like it could be a result of
warp.  Prediction code puts him into the car on the high side, wrecking
him.  Then server sees his actual position & he continues on unscathed.
Possible.

The ratings system will eventually weed out these morons.  That is if we can
get a decent number of ranked races that are not password protected.

Maybe not though... if these guys keep wrecking everyone and winning races
then thier rank will go up also. Unless you are racing with guys you know
then you have to expect stuff like this. It is sad but the real skill on
Sierra.com is AVIODING these guys. That is the real trick.

I wish I could believe it was warp. If it was warp then in all of the
races described the warp ONLY happened:

1. When the car that eventually won or placed high in the race just happened
to be alongside and inside his nearest competition.
2. It always just happened to warp the eventual winner into the car that was
threatening the win: NEVER away from the threatening car.
3.  This "warping" car never "warped" into the wall or the infield but ONLY
into a car that was giving him trouble.
4. The "warping" stopped as soon as this competition vanished.

An increadable series of lucky breaks for the eventual winner? Possible
in one race once in a while but for these things to happen in race after
race after race after race after race after race night after night after
night after night after.....

 No, this is not warp.

I had a similar problem the other night, it wasn't for the lead, but a
fellow who had
similar speed as mine...he got a better start but after a few laps I ran him
down..tried
a pass on the backstretch, but he crowded the corner & I had to back off.
Caught him again and tried to pass high at turn three..he ran me up to the
wall...scraped along and got going again...caught him again...tried inside
of turn 3..went onto the apron...he came down
on the apron too.   tried again at the start finish line, but I faked high
and as he went high to
stuff me again I whipped by his sorry-self down low...ended up almost
lapping him...he was holding up the leaders pulling the same crapola....
leagues are the ONLY way to get away from such bozo's.

Ok.  4 good solid points there.  I withdraw my suggestion. <g>

Where do you go to escape the children?

Marc, I've found this to be false.

Wreckers have become very good at crashing others with minimum damage to
themselves, and if they are damaged they will pit and re-enter the race. As
long as the motor is running, they will wreck.

I was in a 50 lap race last weekend, and the same guy was wrecking the whole
field and killed a nice third place for me. He would pit, get fixed and
re-enter. Park on the racing line on the banking and move at the last
second, swerve into the lead pack, etc. People wanted to drive to his house
and kill him.

League play is the way to go. I've had some great races on-line, but
wreckers are really killing this game for me.

Was it a ranked race?  Did the wrecker have a high ranking?
