I saw some people talking about dying in GPL....is this just an estimate
based on the type of crash they had or does your ***y body really get
thrown from the***pit so you can watch it in the replay??

As a novice and fairly conservative driver I cannot say I have seen this...

It's based on careful analysis of the .rpy file, using a special data
translator that I wrote myself.  It calculates the magnitude and duration of
decelerations, localized to several key points on the body.  These are then
fed into a non-linear finite element model of the head and torso, which it
then ported over to an SGI workstation, where finally a poroelastic
formulation is used to partition the applied impact forces into fluid
pressures and tissue strains within the brain and major internal organs.
These are then compared to a vast database of injury data culled from 25
years of medical literature.

No, actually we all just look at the replay and form a subjective opinion of
how bad the accident was.  :-)

Just estimates. When you go flat out into a house you just can't survive. I
would like to see realistic crashes where the car gets completely
disitegrated, but this would probably be looked at as very sick. The media
would have a field day too.

In GPL ? Liar :)

ok....this is odd because just last night after posting this...here is what
happened

Im taking some qualifying laps at Monza trying to set a personal best when I
overshoot the Parabolica and into the sand..

Backing out I neglected to check the mirror...BAM, Im hit dead on by a car
entering the turn...possibly too fast himself. Next thing I know the screen
goes to static and I have to ESC out of it...them Im all nice and warm
feeling back in my car at the pits.

SO - this leads me to wonder...when you die, instead of seeing a bright
white light maybe you see static?

Or was this just me blacking out? Because later in the same race an AI
driver decided to cut over a hair early locking up our wheels and sending me
on my head all the way down and through the tunnel...and again, I saw the
static  for a second but then it was back to a nice view of sparking
pavement.

I thought that when you get a snowy screen after a bad shunt
that sort of signified you were either dead or unconcious.

Why do you feel that the media (which media do you mean?) would have a field
day?  There is more simulated first-person *** and***out there than would
ever be produced by the depiction of an accident in GPL.
Anyway, the sim is fine the way it is, IMO.  There isn't any need for greater
display of damage.  Car smashes, back to the pits for a new one.

interesting topic - I thought there was actually something coded in
the first time it crashed to the desktop... Monza: just stood on it in
the pits and started grabbing gears... came onto the track squirrely
as hell right into the cross hairs of a Ferrari flat out... on impact
my car started skyward, the revs went way overkill, just as I start
thinking 'wow this is gonna be rowdy' silence and black screen then no
more GPL - it was kinda spooky really...

but while we're on the subject, I judge it by the "shudder factor" if
watching the replay actually produces a wince, it probably wouldn't
have gone well - first one was at Watkins Glen, coming out of the last
left hander in the esses, I have a bad habit of over cooking it there
and going wide, pushing about 130 I clipped the end of the guardrail
on the right just before the rear wheel, dropped 100mph instantly,
launched into the air, the engine went silent at the instant of impact
and caught fire in the air, car rolled upside down just in time to
slap the ground and skitter into the guardrail, just kinda sitting
there silent and lifeless - it all happened in an instant - watching
it in chase view it was kinda gruesome

LOL! You need to be as accurate and realistic as possible when talking
GPL...

Here's what I'd like to see:  If you've been a clean racer
who's never shunted anyone off the track, then upon crashing fatally
you see a white light and polygonal angels lifting you out of the
***pit and into the heavens (Or you are suddenly placed in an in-cow
perspective, depending on the belief you select in the player setup
screen).

However, woe betide the driver who races like John Surtees!
We've already seen that the GPL graphics engine can handle flames
decently...
