Help on a monitor question.

by Bria » Tue, 25 Sep 2007 07:53:49

I am currently running win xp on an athlon 1800 with a gforce ti-4200
card. I mostly play f1 challenge 98-02 and Grand Prix Legends. I
currently have a 19 inch crt. There is a good deal I can get on a 22
inch widescreen. Its native resolution is 1600x1200. Can it run lesser
resolutions? Would it be a waste for me to get a monitor like this
with my current set up?
     Thanks for any help.

That ought to be enough to drive a bigger monitor in 2d use. I know there
are some limitations with the very latest & largest monitors (eg I've
seen a Dell which won't work with AGP cards for some reason).

The resolution won't be 1600x1200... that's a 4:3 ratio, similar to your
CRT. There can be problems running some older games in widescreen modes,
but I'm sure there are plenty of people around here (or on the various
forums) who have widescreen experience. I still like my monitors
reassuringly square. :-)

This might be useful, a thread about widescreen GPL...

Yes. The monitor messes about with the video card output to "blur" it
across the full screen (or most of it depending on widescreen
constraints). The result can be ugly sometimes, but is usually quite
acceptable.

I still have a CRT running at 1280x1024 on my faster, *** box. But for
general desktop use this (quiet!) computer has a 20", 1600x1200 monitor,
and it's probably the best purchase I've ever made for my PC.... apart
from GPL, obviously. :-)

Although I still prefer CRTs for *** (I like my blacks black!) if I
had to pick a single monitor it would definitely be a hi-res LCD. I spend
far more time in windows than ***... sadly.

I hope some of that helps.
