My understanding was he had a 486 and a joystick at one point, but he
was still at or near the top of the IVGA rankings.

Actually, it was a coal-fired 286, and the disk drive had a rope start
to get it up to speed.

Actually, you're ALL wrong...

From the Pong & Asteroid Scrolls it is written:

"Julian The Great, being the resourceful sod he is, combined an ancient
8088 with an Intelivision (reworked with a Motorola math-co), and powered
by two rats (Ben and Socrates), who would run in their excersise-wheels
(hooked to a '62 Plymouth Valiant generator) to the beat of the Brady
Bunch intro...

In order him to tame this savage beast (the computer, not the rats), it
was necessary for Julian to have canned-freon (yes children, but this
was before the EPA) in case the unit decided to go into "China Syndrome"
(lessons learned from his father's Variac)...

The monitor was an old '64 Zenith remote B&W, with the remote setup as
the input device.  Multitasking was accomplished by double-clicking the
remote, and depending on the time between clicks (then measured in
micro-seconds) he could then switch from one text-screen to the next...

For this, he is also mentioned in the `History of Zork' (Vol.16, pg.146,
Donkey Kong Press)..."

I will now answer questions from the floor...  ;)
