I need some Steering Wheel help

by Cary Martynui » Thu, 04 Feb 1999 04:00:00

I currently have the ThrustMaster NASCAR SUPER SPORT wheel and pedal
set, and don't really have many complaints about it except the
following:
        How the hell can I get DOS-based games to recognize & calibrate this
wheel\pedal combo?? I dug out some of the older games I had in my closet
in order to try out the new control combo, but the wheel won't calibrate
in these DOS-based games!

        I was trying to play Network Q RAC RALLY, which I used to play without
a problem with my older THRUSTMASTER T2 combo. I have COLIN McRAE RALLY
now and I'm really impressed with it too. Since it (CMR)is a WINDOWS
application, it works without any probs at all.

        Network Q RAC RALLY on the other hand is a DOS-Based program, and no
matter what I try I CANNOT seem to get it to recognize the new  controls
(TM NASCAR Super Sport)! I used to be able to play it with the older TM
T2 combo, so why won't this work with a newer, updated TM wheel?

        Basically, I want to be able to have a fully calibrated control system
that recognizes the controls while in DOS-mode, and allows them to be
used in a game which originates from a DOS prompt.

        Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this wheel to calibrate in DOS
games like Network Q RAC RALLY?

        Thanks in advance for your help!
        Sincerely
        Cary Martynuik

I need some Steering Wheel help

I've just got a TM Formula Sprint (called something different out side of the UK I
think...) as a FREE replacement for a GP1.  The GP1 used to work fine, like your
T2, in Windows and DOS games (GP2 in particular).  Last night I tried GP2 for the
first time with the new wheel, and was having similar problems to you.  I tried
without the pedals, using the wheel paddles, with no success.  However, plugging in
the pedals I had more success.  I calibrated Joystick A X-axis (steering) and
Joystick B Y-axis (pedals) and this worked!  In GP2 you can also select "control
driven calibration" which worked also.  I couldn't get the steering wheel paddles
to work with this method, the right paddle is recognised, but not the left one!
Hope this might help, any other ideas would be helpful too!

Neil

ps the wheel works fine in GPL & other Windows based games with either the wheel
mounted paddles OR the floor pedals.

Some tips on getting the Sprint to work fully in GP2:

Note:  When setting up in GP2, make sure you select "controller
driven".

It looks like the docs for the Sprint on the CD-ROM are wrong.  In DOS
the paddles are:

Right = Joystick A Vertical (Y1)
Left = Joystick B Horizontal (X2)

The pedals are:
Accelerator = Joystick 2 Vertical (Y2)
Brake = Joystick 2 Vertical (Y2)

So for GP2:
Steering = Joystick A Horizontal
Accelerator = Joystick B Vertical (for pedal) or Joystick A Vertical
              (paddle)
Brake = Joystick B Vertical (for pedal) or Joystick B Horizontal
        (paddle)
Clutch = (if using pedals only) Joystick B Horizontal (left paddle) or
         Joystick A Vertical (right paddle)
Gears =  Your choice of Joystick A or B (A = top row, B = bottom row)

As a side note:  I've finally discovered a use for the pedals with the
Sprint unit.  In DOS (or in GPL as "generic" input), you can have the
pedals plugged in and use one of the pedals for an analog clutch (should
work with GP2 as well).  In DOS with the pedals connected the following
are the axes for the Sprint unit:

Left paddle = Joystick 2 Horizontal (X2)
Right paddle = Joystick 1 Vertical (Y1)
Brake pedal = Joystick 2 Vertical (Y2)
Gas pedal = Joystick 2 Vertical (Y2)
Steering = Joystick 1 Horizontal (X1)
Buttons = 4 (Joystick 1 & 2)

The SuperSport is hardwired to have the pedals on separate axes.  This
