GPL- Just got it - Have a Question

by Steven Crook-Dawkin » Sat, 17 Jun 2000 04:00:00

The version that installed off the CD is GPL 1.0.0.

Since I have a Voodoo 3, It seems I'll need to patch
it up to Ver. 1.2 to sort out some rastering problems

But, my question relates to the settings for FF in the core.ini:

force_feedback_latency = 0.085               ; in seconds
force_feedback_damping = 40.0                ; magic number
max_steering_torque = 225.0                  ; in Newton-inches

Can anyone recommend the correct settings for a LWFF,
or should I just leave 'em like that? (Don't want to mess
things up, you see)

Thanks.

I use the following settings for my LWFF based on settings from
Slot's web site at http://www.slottweak.com/gamesettings.htm

force_feedback_latency = 0.045 ; in seconds
force_feedback_damping = 4000.0 ; magic number
max_steering_torque = 2500.0 ; in Newton-inches

I suggest you read the explanantion on Slot's site about the
radically different nature of these numbers from those in the
original core.ini file.  Essentially, ff damping appears to
behave as a force magnitude or torque value and steering torque
appears to behave as a damping value.

I've been using these numbers for about 2 months and have been
very happy with them.

Cheers

Phil

GPL- Just got it - Have a Question

Thanks for trying Grand Prix Legends. I own a LWFF as well and found the
defaults didn't really "speak" to me.

In the Wingman properties I have following settings:

Overall strength : 130%
Spring effects : 100%
Damper effects : 0%
Centering spring: disabled (<---- very important for GPL)

and core.ini settings as follows:

[ Joy ]
allow_force_feedback = 1           ; Use FF if device has it
force_feedback_damping = 15.000000 ; force feedback damping coefficient
force_feedback_latency = 0.008000  ; force feedback latency (secs)
max_steering_torque = 350.000000   ; steering torque in N*in giving max
device force

These settings can be quite personal... it's a "feel" thing. The latency
setting is probably the easiest to arrive at. Just tweak it until the force
feedback is in sync with the actions of the car.

Alison Hine has a very usefull page on FF at her site, which in itself is a
must see for GPL racers.

[snip]

And there are some of us (well, at least one ;-) who believes
Slot's theory is just plain wrong... But whatever feels good
to you is good, so you should really try changing the values
to find out what you like best.
