F1 in America question

by jlohma » Thu, 18 Oct 2001 09:56:23

Doesn't it seem odd that just about half of the latest racing games are F1
based games? If F1 did not have a following in America, why would companies
like EA (which is an American corporation) release F1 games instead of CART
games? I realize they can sell these games (probably in greater number) in
Europe. But (no offense), when has American coprorations cared about selling
products in Europe? I should say, when has American corporations cared about
making a product specificly for Europe? Which brings me to another question,
when all the F1 broadcast gets cancelled in America (if, I should say), will
these corporations still make F1 games for sale in America?
I say bring back the tape delayed races, I think more American's would watch
if it were in the afternoon. I know from this last year, that most of my
friends that used to watch F1 tape delayed on Sunday afternoon, did not wake
up at 6:30 (central time), to watch a F1 race.

I tape most races so I can blitz through the commercials.  (Except the new
7-up soda commercial...the 5 mph Nascar idea is great!)  But...EA has an
entire European division, to call them only a US based company is a
misnomer.
And did you notice the US sales of the GP3 expansion pack?  no?  Thats
because Hasbro or whomever owns Crammond these days didn't make a US release
of Gp 3 2000.  In fact if you mailorder the product and have it imported, it
still won't work with your US pressing of GP3.
I think the USA as a whole is not the strongest Sim racing market.  Sure
there are tons of sales for racing-lite products like Need for Speed and, of
course, Nascar.  But open wheel racing in anyform takes a back seat these
days.

Only about 250,000 of the 350,000,000 viewers of each F1 race come from the
U.S.

Why wouldn't a company want to make an F1 sim as opposed to any other type
of motor racing? It's, by a huuuuuuuge margin, the most popular form of
motor sport world wide, and neck and neck with soccer in total popularity.

BTW, a huge part of F1's fan base comes from Asia. South America too. It's
not just a European sport.

Not sure, but maybe more people in the U.S. follow F1 than CART. I don't
know of anyone who follows CART, although I must admit I don't know EVERYONE
in the U.S.  :>)

I would like to see a CART sim though - for variety, if nothing else.

Have not came upon anyone who follows Cart or F1 here in the US
. Nascar seems to be the auto racing choice of most I've talked too.

My favorite is CART - I've been an Indycar fan since 1973.  I also like F1, but
I haven't followed that series for as long.
I like NASCAR, but it's hardly my FAVORITE...
