Can you link more than 2 player in NASCAR

Hi,

I've been modem racing with some friends lately and loving it!  I
think it adds a great element to an already great sim( Nothing like
spinning a friend in the Tri-oval at Talledaga).

Is there any way to hard link more than 2 players?  I would gladly
haul my computer over to some friends house if we could all race each
other i.e. 3 or more players.  Is this possible or just a pipe dream?

Cheers,

Ian

No, NASCAR Racing does not support more than 2 players. Sorry.

In the book Nascar Racing Strategies and Secrets there's some discussion
about an online racing network... humm...

Funny, I went to Race-A-Rama (pre-season racing car show) in West
Springfield this past March and in the New Hampshire International
Speedway display was a 4-player Papyrus game set up to let kids take a
few laps around NHIS.

The display was handled by a few people in Papyrus t-shirts so they
probably know how to link oh, say, 4 computers together.

Of course the display was extremely popular and while I wouldn't have
minded taking the opportunity to show the people who kept crashing
just how it's done <grin> I didn't feel like waiting in line.

I also didn't bother asking the Papyrus guys how it was arranged to
get 4 players on the same track at the same time.

Stop the snow job, Rick, I've seen it with my own eyes  <grin>

Alan,

Rick did mention on the newsgroups that there was a special 4 player
version available for just the type of stuff you mentioned.  And I
hear that the NASCAR Cafe here in Myrtle Beach (opening in Sept) is
going to have an 8 player version (Rick, correct me if this is
inaccurate).

But 2 is the limit for general public consumption.  You basically use
y our multiplayer race.  The version we can buy doesn't have any
provisions for dealing with more than 2 cars.

Someone else also reported seeing this (at a computer trade show).
Rick explained that this was indeed four players in the same race.
The bad news is that this version is not for sale to the public.
Rick did not say why.  I suspect that the amount of support involved
with the network setup, tweeking, etc. would be higher than the
existing version on the market.  I also suspect that the
market for "four player network games" is smaller than the market
for the existing version.

But I still want to buy a copy.... :-)

Why so? Release it as a "patch" to the existing game without the tracks
(i.e. need to buy the full game before the new .EXE is usable). No
support. Heck if they were to release it I'LL support it myself :)

Don't you believe it - how popular do you think DOOM would have been
without network ***? I was bored of the game within a week, but I
STILL play the network game. Racing AI can NEVER be as much fun as
racing your friends no matter how good the AI.

Papyrus, don't miss the opportunity, if IPX network won't be included in
ICR2 for Win95 or NASCAR 2, release the 4 player IPX version - even as
an expansion pack, I'd pay for it without a second thought.

Cheers!
John

A little theory here:  there's already networking support in Win95,
wouldn't a network-play version be a matter of writing an EXE
that uses the network API?

Oh yeah, i'd buy a copy no question about it.  With Ethernet cards as
cheap as they are, i'm sure lots of others would step up with me.

Without a doubt!
Once you start playing against humans, using the computer program as just the
vehicle for your competition, nothing else comes close.   All computer AI pales in
comparison..

I've played Descent in a room with 14 computers - 14 copies of Descent, and 14
crazy Descent players....  The more the merrier.  Playing against the computer
after you've battled 7 other human opponents is hard to endure.

There's also an internet "air warrior" flight game, but I haven't tried it.  YET!
(anyone know of the news group for that?)

You and me BOTH.  It MIGHT give me an excuse to upgrade my hardware and build
a network at home<g>.

I am NOT paranoid.  And why are you always watching me?!?
