Game Controllers - making life more difficult?

Hi all,

I always had the thinking that a game controller would make playing a game
easier than with the keyboard, hence my purchase of the LWFF (since many of you
guys use that) 3 days ago. Well, the wheel is nice, the ff is good, looks pretty
good, enjoyed playing it, well at lease until it broke down after 3 days of
usage. Note i didn't use the word abuse.

Anyway back to the main point. I tested it on NFS6: Porsche Unleashed and GP2.
Well, ff is great and all but control is really weird. I just couldn't match or
beat my best times achieved using the keyboard. Especially so in GP2. Kinda like
a nightmare using the wheel in GP2. Couldn't complete a lap with the 'Steering
Help' option disabled. And even with the feature enabled, i just couldn't keep
within the racing line while turning. Using the keyboard is so much easier! The
only good thing is that I can get off the start much better.

Someone please tell me all i need is a little getting used to cause I'm
beginning to regret getting that $140 purchase!

oh ya, just like to ask something - doesn't GPL support FF? I tried that game
but can't seem to feel the force. and of course you can pretty much guess how i
fared in that game. How the #$%^ do you guys do it?!!! :)

They aren't suppose to break of course.  My Logitech has lasted nearly a
year now.

GP2 and GP3 and pretty much everthing (except maybe GPL) is way harder (at
least initially) on a wheel, because the game isn't filtering your input.
Driving an F1 car with digital controls would be nearly impossible in
reality, so the game basically helps you.  So you've never really had to
control the car before.  On the keys you just hit accelerate and the
computer does the rest.  In a real F1 if you just floor the throttle you get
tons of wheelspin and will probably spin.  You've gotta learn to drive the
car all over again.

The good thing though, is that if you can win races on a wheel without
driving aids (including no throttle help) you get more satisfaction from it,
and the experience is closer to the real sport.

I've had my LWFF for over a year. So far no problems.

There is no way that using the keyboard would get a better lap time
than using a wheel. Also GP2 is a DOS game and while it will work
you are really doing the wheel a dis-service. Try a good Windows
game.

I would suggest completely forgetting about your laptimes with the
keyboard and concentrate at the current situation.

Read the readme that comes with the patch.

Yep. Just curious, do you guys use steering help?
