GPL: sb16 to sblive value: snap, crackle, pop

Hoping to cure the sound problems in gpl and viper, I picked up the sblive
value from buycomp for $55.  Installation was simple, windows sound and
other games work perfectly, but gpl and viper are still a problem.  Instead
of the treble cutting out, coming back, cutting out again, etc, which the
sb16 was plagued with, now I get constant background static, much like fm
radio when you're not tuned just right, as well as intermittent popping and
crackling, which happens in a rythm, almost like it's popping at the end of
each rotation of the .wav files.  On the good side, 16 sounds gives the same
frame rate as 16 sounds on my p200mmx.  Also, framerate is slightly improved
all around.  I just wish I could clear it up.  Any other ideas any current
sblive owners have?  I'm running win95b, 64ram.  I have put just about every
audio cd I have into the computer, and they all play fine, at any volume, so
I'm still pretty sure the speakers are ok.

I currently have the treble slider in the center, bass one notch above
center.  The further treble goes left, the less static I have, but obviously
less treble also.  Playing with environments can sometimes reduce static,
but it's always there, especially at higher rpm's.  I'm about to give up.

I bought a Yamaha Waveforce 192XG and I was getting the same type of popping
noise in Viper Racing. After downloading the latest drivers for the sound
card my problem was solved. Maybe this will help you as the drivers that
ship with a product are rarely the most current ones. Beyond that I am sorry
that I don't have a clue. Try running Windows Explorer and opening the
Program Files; DirectX folder and run (by double clicking) the DXDiag file.
Maybe this can help you locate where your problem is coming from.

Thanks for the reply, but I can't find a slider.  I pulled up multimedia
properties, clicked the advanced tab, but it just lists all the different
devices (ie. audio devices, midi devices, mixer devices), I don't see
anything about performance.  Are you using win95 or 98?

Man, you've got me stumped. The SB Live Value did exactly the opposite for me,
all the static I had in GPL went away as soon as I installed the card,
however...it totally screwed up F1RS!

Try reducing hardware acceleration for the playback a notch and see if it
improves.
Go into audio hq, then click on View, and Multimedia Properties. Then click
on advanced properties, then performance.  There you will see the slider for
hardware acceleration for playback - it should be all the way to the right.
Bump it down a notch.

  I'm curious.
could his problem be the  OEM version of the card.  I know
a couple of years ago,  Matrox got in some hot water for providing
Gateway and some other mail order builders with Vid Cards that
did not meet the published specs for the model that Gateway
said was in thier system.  I wonder if the OEM Live is of inferior
quality as well???

This is the retail box, just like at best buy.  I don't know what else to
do, the static if horrid with no effects on, and still annoying with
enviromental effects.

I got the SBLive (value) and found the same problem with a few games,
especially when I turned the resolution up.  ie 640:480 to 800:600

I just got  a copy of Superbikes and they had some new drivers for my
DS Monster... and wadda know... ALL the games where I had the crackle
and static are now perfect.   I'd check the drivers of your video
card...

The only driver I haven't downloaded for my stealth s220 is the bios update
from 1.35 to 1.36.  I can try it, but I really don't think it'll help.
