I get very little feel for the limit of traction
when braking.  The same goes for accelerating.  It's
almost as if there is traction control operating all
the time.

Better feel for limits of traction would be a big
improvement.

Since I can't get my pedals to work in any mode, I have to rely on
pushbotton accel and brake.  Is it possible that traction control exists
with digital controls (like Nascar 1 or was it Nascar 2 when under
acceleration)?

It has traction control with analogue gas and brake too.
