It only works if you can change the CPU-speed by changing the jumpersetting.
I've got my p90 running on 100 just by replacing three jumpers and it works
great (for almost over a year now)

Advice, Don't do it!  This is the kind of stuff that I do for a living
and the
reason that your CPU is a 90 is because it failed tests to be a 100.
When you overclock, you are not going to light the processor on fire in
most cases, but you will increase your chances of incorrect data
processing.  This may only happen once in a blue moon but won't you feel
better knowing that the number you just got from your computer was
correct?

Would that be anything like the infamous floating point prob in the
early intel chips?

Not really, but I will feel better getting a "P-200" for several hundred
dollars less than Intel are asking people to pay at the moment. I had a
"P-200" six months before Intel did, and it's still going strong. By the
time it's ready to expire, it'll be worth about $20 and I could throw it
in the trash anyway. Such is the march of progress.

Just the other side of the coin....

Cheers!

I agree wholeheartedly. How did you get to 200? What did it start as? I have a
p5-150 juiced to 166 but my mobo doesnt list 200. It has a row of 8 dipswitches
and I believe a jumper that I have not located yet. The last 4 dipswitch
settings combined with the mystery jumper set the speed. 166 is dips4-8 on and
j1n1 4/5. I would really like to go all the way to 200 and am figuring at the
most I will replace this CPU in a year so whats to lose. Any ideas?

Just cos your chip say 75/90 etc on it, it does not mean it will
fail when you chip it. as far as I am aware Intel speed test
a silicon slice of chips untill they all pass a set speed test.

Dropping the speed if they get a failure.  Sooo your chip may have run OK
at a higher speed but lowered due to another chip on the same slice
failing the test.  my 75 has been running at 100 for 3 months no probs.

If this chipping business wreaked chips intel would be smiling as they
would be selling loads of replacements. No they have put speed
limiters on tjeir new chips to stop overclocking. for a company to do
this must be proof that the chipping is working for a large amount of chippers  :)

[snip overclocking posts]

Not sure if this'll help, but if your motherboard is an Intel Endeavor,
you can get the most up-to-date documentation on them at www.intel.com.
Or maybe your manufacturer has a web page with current documentation on
it.

The docs I got with my Endeavor were pretty elderly, and didn't document
all the switches and jumpers, so I d/led the latest from Intel (along with
the lastest BIOS).  Voila, how to jumper for 200Mhz.  Now, if only I could
persuade my P133 to run faster than 133Mhz ...

Hi Rob,

Actually the clock-limiting was put in place because the surface of the
ceramic was being skimmed off (along with the speed markings), and new
markings put in place showing a higher rating. Intel is obviously
against overclocking, but the clock-limiters stopped SELLING overclocked
chips, not to stop people doing it.

I agree with you though, it's a great idea!

Cheers!

My motherboard directly lists 200Mhz (66Mhz x 3).

how to overclock????!!!!!!

Just a note that most Pentium motherboards will run at one of three
clock speeds, 50MHz, 60MHz or 66MHz. The chips are available in the
following speeds:

60MHz   (60MHz x 1)
66MHz   (66MHz x 1)
75MHz   (50MHz x 1.5)
90MHz   (60MHz x 1.5)
100MHz  (66MHz x 1.5)
120MHz  (60MHz x 2)
133MHz  (66MHz x 2)
150MHz  (60MHz x 2.5)
166MHz  (66MHz x 2.5)
200MHz  (66MHz x 3)

If you have a 100MHz or 133Mhz Pentium, you can't speed it up. It's
already running at the maximum clock rate. Most motherboards seem to have
two sets of jumpers. One sets the clock rate, and the other lets the
motherboard know what the divider is in the chip. To be honest, I don't
know if that last one alters any timings, or just changes the speed shown
on the startup screen.

Some motherboards may possibly support a 75MHz rate. I think I read that
Cyrix may come out with a chip that supports that.

Damn! Does that mean that my P133 which has been running at 200Mhz for
six months now is lying to me....? :)

P-100 and P-133 can be overclocked just as well as any other CPU. A P100
is not as likely to voerclock (with reasons I bored everyone to tears
with in Sim Racing News), but a P-133 is an excellent overclocking
candidate.

Cheers!

I've overclocked a 100Mhz to 120 Mhz without any problems so...
