NASCAR 3--What am I doing wrong at Tally?

Picked up a copy of Nascar 3 today at EB (Athens GA).

GPL fanatics will be disappointed.  Nascar 2 lovers will like it
(definitely more realism, but still Nascar 2).  You can import your
car setups but not your cars.  Tracks look good, tire smoke is cool,
motor and tire squeal is cool.  The cars actually race you cleaner
than they did in N2 (at least they did at New England).

Only problem I'm having is with Talladega.  I used the ACE setup and
set car strength at 97%.  I can't seem to get my car up to speed.
Even after I adjusted the setup, giving myself a higher gear ratio I
couldn't hang with tail draggers.  My speeds didn't approach what they
do on the track in real life (at New England I was very close to my
old N2 speeds and the track record).  If anyone else tries Tally and
gets their cars up to speed please post so that I'll know It's a
configuration problem with my pc and not something in the game.

Use a 3.10 4th gear and give it 2 or 3 laps to get up to speed.

OK, I got it.  For some reason, the ACE setup doesn't red light in
third.  So While I was waiting for the right moment to shift, the
other cars got away.  Went back and shifted between 8 and 9 without
waiting for the red light and the car sped up fine and I caught the
field.

btw, Tally AI are awesome, constantly shifting back and forth, going
three wide in all the turns, and most important of all, not doing the
kamikaze on me when I'm on the bottom (even when we're three wide in
the turns).  I think that beside all the graphic and sound
improvements, I'm going to like the new AI the best.

At Talledega the cars run the restrictor plate engine, it doesn't
rev as high as normal, I think peak HP is in the vicinity of 8000 rpm
so you have to shift a whole lot earlier than normal to keep in the
power band and keep up with the AI. The default 4th gear is pretty
good.
