Not that you're upset about this, but I never understood why people get
so upset about this kind of convienent posting.  Claims of taking up
space and bandwidth and such, I don't get it.  I use Netscape to look
through the posts and when I see one that's interesting (like the Nascar
flip) I click on it.  Is there some REAL reason that binaries should not
be posted on the group of interest?  Not just, your not supposed to.
But a REAL reason.  I find it quite conveinent and enjoyable to find
pictures of interest to the group posted IN the group.

Just wondering?

It's often quite inconvienent for the System Administrators in charge of
the news servers.  While it's true one or two binary posts don't ammount to
much, but where do you draw the line?  Many small ISPs choose to olny carry
discussion groups as they don't have the resources to keep up with the
binaries groups.  Continual posting of binaries to discussion groups can
result in these ISPs to drop them to elievate the strain on their already
tight resources.  The binaries groups were created to give the ISPs a
choice of whether or not to carry them.

I know that it seems that almost everyone in the world has the same
setup to read newsgroups as you do.  However, that is not the case. Some
people still have to do it the old-fashioned way.  They download a
newsgroup (yes they may scan the headers before doing so, but one can't
always tell that there is a large binary attached).  As odd as it may
seem, some people have to pay for the amount of time they are on the net.

My ISP has a huge amount of money invested in equipment and that
includes tons of disk space.  However, at times their disks alotted to
newsgroups overflows and we stop getting news until this can be taken
care of.  Other ISP's don't have the luxury of huge disk arrays and
simply don't carry any "binary" groups because they take up tons of
space.  Even other ISP's have gone so far as to "throw out" articles in
non-binary newsgroups that have binaries in them.  They never see the
light of day for some readers.

On top of all of that, these binaries must be moved through the already
congested "super information highway".  Sure, you say, what's the
difference if it's in a discussion group or a binary group, it still
is pushed down the pipe.  Well, as I mentioned earlier some ISP don't
offer binary groups for various reasons.  You are forcing them to use up
valuable resources that they can't afford.  Also, some ISP's may take the
action to drop newsgroups that carry unwarranted binaries.

There are also "binary cancelling" patrols on the net.  When they find
large binaries in discussion groups that message gets purged across the
net.  So, in point the idea of sharing the binary is lost.  The binary
gets destroyed before many people even get the chance to see it.  Only
the people who happen to have extremely fast news feeds saw this last
one.  Others will never see it.  So why not post it in its proper place
so it will stay around for people who want it?

One last point, it's just plain rude.  Like talking in a theatre during
a movie or play.  Everything has its place.  r.a.s. is not the place for
large binaries.  alt.binaries.simulators.auto is the place for large
binaries.

This concludes this public service announcement.  We will now continue
with our regular discusions of auto racing simulations.  Thank you for
time.

Well, for one thing, that's why I also subscribe to
alt.binaries.simulators.autos Have the filters setup to catch files
only having Nascar in the subject line, that way when I don't have
time for binariy downloads I can check just the text groups like THIS
ONE, without being stuck waiting for a file to download that I can
plan time for later on when I pull headers in the file groups.
