400 mile races at Darlington and Rockingham

Does anyone know why two races in the 1996 season have been shortened
from 500 miles to 400 miles?  The first race at Rockingham is being
billed as the Goodwrench 400 instead of the Goodwrench 500, and the
second race at Darlington has been announced as the Mountain Dew Southern
400 instead of the Mountain Dew Southern 500.

Are these typos or is this real?  If anyone knows, I'd like to know the
reason why they have been shortened.

I'm just guessing, but it's probably due to time. A 500 at the Rock,
sometime can go 5 or 6 hours. I'm not sure if you've been to a race,
but that's to damn long to sit on a hard bench and watch a race. I want
to the Coke600 in May95. Way too long for me.

last year the first race at rockingham AND the first race at darlington
were 400 mile races.  I remember hearing at the end of the 94 season the
plans for this change.  I couldn't tell you why they changed the 400 mile
race at darlington to the fall though.  that seems strange considering
that is one of the BIG races involved in the Winston Million

It is still the Southern 500. They changed the March 24 date
(TranSouth Financial 400) according to the schedual I have. :-(  
They would not change the SOUTHRN 500! This race has to much Tradition
involved to be changed.;)
