Snetterton - How can I pack mips into 1 DAT file?

by Jason Mond » Sun, 26 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to setup my dedicated server and I can't start Snetterton.  I
upped the FILES=255 entry in config.sys, defragged the HD.  Loaded the
small 3DO file and it still hangs.

It works fine on my P3/550 128mb computer, but on my dedicated P200 64mb
computer it doesn't :-(

I'm thinking the number of separate files to open might be the problem.  Do
you know how I can pack the separate files into 1 DAT file?

Please help so I can get my "You be the Boss" server started with all 49
tracks! :-D

Thank you,
Jason

Hey Jason,

You need the pack/unpack utility, available from the uspits

http://www.theuspits.com/

Is that WINMIP, Rem?  I thought it would only re-pack a DAT that's been
opened and had a PCK file created during that process.  The Snett package
doesn't appear to have that PCK file.

Maybe WINMIP does the same, I don't know, it has been a while. The
Pack/Unpack tools are MS-DOS based, and I believe they also use a .PCK
file. But IIRC that PCK file is just a TXT file which contain all the
files what should go into the DAT file.

Oh....okay.  I must admit to preferring to have everything neatly tucked
away in the DAT file. This is simply because if any updates/enhancements
come along they can just be dropped into the folder and then stand out like
the proverbials.

I don't think it will work - some of the files have names more than 8
characters long. When I pack them with my own tools the resulting
DAT doesn't work, and I don't believe its a bug in the tools.

Cheers
Nigel

Snetterton - How can I pack mips into 1 DAT file?

by Jason Mond » Thu, 30 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Well, I finally got Snetterton to work.  I created a single DAT file with most
of the mips using Ron Ayton's fanastic instructions, but it still failed.  The
solution was to install my Voodoo1 card!  It still takes about 15 seconds to
load the track but at least it works :-D

Watch for my "YouBeTheBoss" server up this weekend!

Jason.
