GPL setups.

I have been using Alison's Ferrari setups, and they seem quite good, except
there seems to be masses of understeer.

Is this just a feature of GPL handling, or is there something I can adjust
it out with?

Are there any better setups around? (All my links, including Alison's site
seem to be broken).

Thanks.

I'd second the recommendations for Roland Ehnstrom's setups, but would
advise that you start with the ones labeled "RE", and only much later mess
around with the RE2 setups.  The RE2 versions are a bit more tricky to drive
due to more extreme differential settings.  I'd also highly recommend the
original Greger Huttu (GH) setups (he also later released a bunch of more
extreme "GH2" setups with trickier differentials that you'll want to avoid
until you're well negative).  You can find his here:
http://www.teamredline.co.uk/gh_gpl.htm . Then, to round out the set, I'd
suggest that you also download and play around with some Wolfgang Woeger
setups.  I'm afraid I couldn't find a good link, but maybe somebody else
will have one.

I progressed from WW to RE to GH setups and the progression felt comfortable
and easily got me down into to negative GPLRank territory. The key is that
each of these sets is consistent and predictable, so you can focus on
improving your technique and line without worrying that the setup is way
off.

I went back and looked at a couple and basically it appeared to me that the
understeer is coming from the same places it does in the default setups:
tire pressures and coast side diff setting.  Having the front tires 3 psi
less than the rears is going to cause a lot of understeer and is really not
optimal.  If you set the pressures either according to temps or according to
hot pressure (which according to Huttu should be 25 psi) either way I
usually end up with 20 psi cold on all four.  That by itself will make a big
difference.  Also the 30 degree coast side angle causes massive turn-in
understeer followed by loss of rear wheel traction if you went in too hot.
The better way to stabilize braking and corner entry is to use a little
toe-out in front.  Try a coast side angle of 60 or 85 and -0.125" of front
toe.  This will give you a nice clean corner entry with only mild
understeer.  If that's still not stable enough try setting the front bump
dampers to 1 click higher than the rear.

One other thing - if you trail brake, Alison's brake bias settings are
probably too far forward for you.  This will cause turn-in understeer also.
Take them rearward a couple of clicks and see if that feels better.  If you
don't trail brake then don't bother changing it.

Yup. Some people can handle that (I guess they like trailbraking a lot),
some - like me - after a while get a bit frustrated by all that sliding
straight on if you dare to keep the throttle down a bit...

Yep, better (or rather, 'different') setups.

Yes, but it depends on your driving style and the car you're driving...
Personally, I like stable, predictable and fairly 'neutral' setups which
let you drive with the throttle as well.

For the Ferrari, I therefore recommend Jim Pearsons 'Consistent to a
Base' setups which instantly improved my Monaco and Zandvoort times by a
second.

For the Eagle, go hunt for Peter Jensen's setups.

For the Lotus, Greger H's 'GH1' setups are pretty darn good in most
places and not as twitchy as you'd expect.

Most can be found through racesimcentral.com (which has a search function).
