Which steering wheel ??

by Mar » Mon, 31 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Hi all

I'd appreciate some advice on buying a steering wheel and pedal setup.
I just bought Mobil 1 Rally and TOCA2 touring cars and I only have a
joystick right now

Any models to go for and any models to avoid?

Is it worth getting a force feedback model?

All recommendations gratefully received.

I have the microsoft ff wheel, it works perfect. I have yet to find a game
that was not supported. The pedals are not as good as the ch pedals, but
they actually work fine, they didnt take long to get used to at all. A
friend of mine has the Logitech ff wheel and it seems to work fine also... I
personally do not like the pedals at all, they dont have as much travel, but
the logitech wheel is usb. Another thing I like about the msfff wheel is the
controller software that comes with it, you can setup profiles for each
game. All the buttons are programmable. Also there are 2 more buttons on the
msff wheel. Whatever the choice you make get force feedback, it makes the
games much more realistic and fun, especially the sierra based racing games,
gpl, N3, Viper they all have execellent force feedback. I would suggest the
Microsoft wheel over the logitech, unless you have to have a usb wheel.

I just posted a message under "Re: LWFF Help Needed << Long >>" about
the MSFF vs. LWFF.  IMNSHO, the LWFF is better than the MSFF, but the
MSFF is not without its strong points (like the pedals).  Read the
message for a lot more details.

Oh, and the LWFF is also programmable.

Which steering wheel ??

I prefer the V4 Interact Force Feedback Racing Wheel . I have been using it
since the December of 98.

When I first got it I had problems with the frame rate. I quickly figured
out the program that is installed with the Drivers for the wheel itself is
the culprit. Particularly JoyEdit which installs itself in your startup
file. Once I deleted JoyEdit from my startup and upgraded to the new drivers
the frame rates greatly improved.

I recently purchased the Act Labs Force RS Wheel with the Shifter. With  all
the talk of which wheel to buy and which wheel is the best the fancy new
features that the RS offered finally lured me into buying the wheel and the
shifter. I  loved the shifter, loved the looks of the wheel but hated how
the wheel felt when racing. I did not feel that the RS was giving me half as
much feedback as the V4. After numerous efforts with their tech support
finally sent the RS back for a refund. The V4 currently sits on my computer
desk again and proably will for a while.

As the "future producer" of a FF steering wheel, I must in all honesty
recommend two wheels currently.

I would recommend the Logitech, or the Act Labs Force-RS.

For the time being... they will offer the highest positioning resolution for
FF wheels.

Their pedal units may be a bit to be desired as a whole... but they are a
lot better than poor resolution and terrible taxation from the others.

Some may also recommend the Guillemot Ferrari Wheel, but I can tell you that
the positioning resolution is NOT what people are posting here. I base this
"factual testing" on equipment that NO sim racer that I know of possesses.
It is based on USB/Numerical testing equipment that is normally reserved for
the developers themselves.

Some have harped on me for not producing "software to calculate the PR" on
this newsgroup, and my reply is "there isn't software that does it yet....
it's hardware that sim racers are not inclined to purchase"

Trust me.... The Logitech and the Act Labs are the 2 you should be looking
at in this day.

Who has claimed that the Ferrari wheel has high resolution for the wheel?
Everyone who owns one can tell you it's ***(about 100 increments).  The
pedals, on the other hand, have great resolution--probably more than is
needed.

Marc.

Uhmmmmm....... the pedals are using the exact same algorithm in the USB chip
as the Wheel. The positioning resolution is the same in the pedals as it is
on the wheel. You don't notice the difference as much in the pedals because
it has a shorter travel than the steering radius mechanically...

Cheers,

Shumi

I actually tend to prefer non-FF over FF wheels, but there are a lot of
people who swear by (instead of AT) their FF wheels.  It's purely a
matter of budget and personal taste -- try before you buy if you can.

If you'd like to read some in-depth reviews on some of the hardware
that's currently available, try this link:

Enjoy!

After I have had my Logitech Force Feedback Wheel, I could never ever enjoy
a non - force feedback wheel again. If I had to choose between a TSW, ECCI,
or Logitech Wingman Formula Force...........the LWFF would win hands down
because of force feedback.

How much do you want to spend. Do you care for a stick shifter as well as
paddles? Are split axis pedals important to you?
