I have the same problem with Powerslide, and emaild the RatBaggy coder of
contoller routines. He sent me a tool to take contoller value snapshots to
send in. Haven't heard from the RatBaggy for some time, and haven't pursued
it for some time because I've been working on a crisp new SCGT sound update
(finished today!). We are still trying to find a solution.. I keep
expecting to see a patch soon, but each new patch doesn't help..
Symptoms are: erratic slow mouse movements in the controllers screen and
non-correct detection of axis's (axii?). This is not a DirectX problem; if
it were, it would be corrected by now in the DX7 beta which I test for
Microsoft.. ( yeah, I know it sounds like old old Yamaha synth!). I've
tried everything to get Powerslide to recognize my dual-axis TM GP1 setup.
The brake axis can get switched backwards, as you describe, and calibrated
wrong. I suspect throwing a clutch pedal into the equasion has confused it
even more. Do you have a schematic for your controller wiring and is your
wiring sound? Even a small fault will throw many Controller routines for a
loop. How does your Win98 controller app calibration go? After calibration,
the '+' should wind up going through the full range of the box ie: it should
be at the top at rest and move to the bottom without any big jumps. Likewise
left/right movement and brake movements should be smooth and the full range
of their respective box. check the buttons too.. see if they flash if you
hold them down while you move the steering wheel and paddles. If they flash,
your wiring harness or heaven forbid your soldering may be flakey =:o(
There are a couple of loopholes in this controller bug (or maybe we should
call it controller bug system). It seems you can trick the interface into
providing a different axis for a control by reserving the axis you don't
want that controller to default to. You do this by setting up a different
control than the one you want (it defaults to the wrong axis) and the axis
you want may wind up with the correct one, or a brake pedal that releases
the brake as you apply it! This will test patience as you have to load the
race again each time to see if your new axis/controller selections work.
Play around with hitting the buttons while holding the paddles half way, you
may be able to do it..
This could be a problem with the game port too, but I have tried 3 different
types of game port, including 3.3v and 5v, to no avail.
Eventually I gave up and hit on a simple combination just to get racing..
Using the under-thumb buttons for throttle and handbrake, I set trans to
Auto, and then learned a whole new style of take no prisoners full
throttle-no throttle driving that works pretty well in the game.
Powerslide is terrific fun, and worth the bother. Lets work to get this
fixed soon. Maybe we should both send in a new report to the RatBaggers
including platform and setup details.
