okay, Im trying to get into the game and once I got over
 the graphical and menu disappointments and all the stuff
 you notice when you first run it, I found myself quite
 enjoying racing - although I dont find the driving and the
 adjustments that you have to make that involving.

 But a few questions:

 a) none of the AI cars are making any sounds - where is the
 option to turn them on ?

 b) the settings for virtual***pit are disabled (even in
 software mode) and I cant seem to do the + -, moving the
 driving position.

 FWIW I reckon the datalogging is utterly awesome and is
 almost reason enough to justify buying the game.....

There isn't one.

I think you have to do manual graphics settings for it to come on, and
then it ONLY works in software mode anyway.

<snip>

I have it working in HW mode. I think you just need to select manual settings
instead of automatic.

<snip>

You can not hear them in GP3.

Have you tried selecting "manual" graphics detail settings first
instead of "auto"?

No. I run hardware and have no problem using + - to adjust driving
position.
