N2002--When is the race "officially" over

Is there a time limit in which every car has to pass the finish line
before the race game considers the race officially over?
In a Taladega race while running in third place (with one lap to go) I
blew my front tires in an accident. I continued racing since the
second placed car was running out of fuel. The second placed car
eventually stopped on the track and called the tow truck. I crawled to
the finish line without front tires, but before I ever crossed the
start/finish line the spotter said "Come on in, the race is over." I
ended up being third in the standings and the car that ran out of fuel
stayed in second. How can that be? I DID cross the start/finish line
and the second place finisher never crossed the line (The start/finish
line in Taladega is BEHIND the pitlane and not in the middle of it
like on most tracks). So I was wondering if there is a time limit in
which you have to cross the start/finish line after the leader/winner
takes the checkered flag? If there is one, does it change depending on
the size of the track? What are the rules in the real Winston cup?
In another scenario that might be totally unrelated, I races Bristol.
I was 1 lap ahead of the second place car when I took the checkered
flag for the win. In the final standings the second place car was
listed 2 laps down ... no warp was involved. Is this a bug, or
somebody has an explanation for it.
So many questions ... thank you in advance.

No time limit in the sim that I know of, fwiw, definately not in actual
Cup racing.  Hard to say what happened at Tally, but since the second place
car ran out of fuel, did a yellow come out ?  If so, may be tied to that.

Re Bristol, yep, I've seen a similiar thing happen, think it's a bug
there.

No explaination for the timing thing here. I do know that if a car cannot
cross the finish line then the order is scored as of their last visit to the
S/F line, in the sim and in NASCAR. And it could be related to the
phenomenon you mentioned and I address below.

As for Bristol, we observe that all the time unfortunately and it is warp
related. You don't have to warp per se, but if the server loses track of you
for the split second you are crossing the S/F line, then it does not count
you for that lap. We have guys that continually do it, their connections
look ok, but the server doesn't count their laps. Has happened at Richmond,
Dover, Coca Cola and Lowes that I am aware of in our league. Was it at a
restart or coming to a yellow? Those seem to be the times when the problem
occurs the most. It is possible to have a bad Q spike and everyone still see
you and you them, but the server loses track of you and that is all it
takes.

Actually there is a time limit after the leader takes the checkered flag
to prevent someone from just parking during the last lap and holding up
the race indefinitely.  The timer is based off of some multiple of the
track's nominal lap time, and should be reasonably long enough so that
you can still limp around at a decent speed and make it in time.  Any
cars that don't take the checkered are scored as of their last
successful lap crossing.

Yes, there is a time limit.  The checkered flag will only fly for some
multiple (I think about one-and-a-half) of a good lap time before it's
withdrawn and scoring is discontinued.  I believe this is the case in GPL,
N4 and N02.
